I am having a huge problem. I have been on my period since my surgery 7 weeks ago. On again, off again, just never completely stopping. I have lost about 40 pounds, and I was thinking that this could just be hormonal stuff from surgery. I was hoping that would have let up by now. I lost 60 pounds previously and my cycle evened out and happened on time monthly. It hasn't been heavy or abnormal but I'm worried and so tired of this! Could I be anemic or something? Does anyone else have this problem? So sorry to for the subject!

What kind of birth control are you using? How old are you? Have you ever had issues like this before? Period issues can be very complex. Congrats on all the weight you have already lost wow!

Talk to your gynecologist. Sounds like hyperplasia. That means the lining of your uterus has thickened and not shed, over months or years. This is pretty common with obese women especially with PCOS and if your period has stopped due to your weight. The period won't stop until the lining sheds. I had a period non-stop for two months. Had to have a D&C to stop it. Then I had the Mirena IUD placed, which keeps the lining thin.

and I am not a female, but am not bothered by any info. Remember, we've all had people playing with our insides and removing a majority of our stomach.

Please see your OB-GYN. Very likely homonal see for basics:

And yes, menstruation and anemia can certainly go hand in hand.

Yep lack of periods (amennhorea) and hyperplasia are both caused by excess estrogen. Estrogen is made by the ovaries but also by abdominal fat. The fact that your period started after surgery means your hormones are balancing. But you may need help (the D&C) to reset things.

I have an IUD which keeps the lining of my uterus very thin and I was on my period for my first 4-5 months post op. On and off, on and off... It sucked big dinks because I had an IUD to prevent periods and then I had one for that long PLUS almost a month pre-op!??!?

My NP said estrogen is stored in fat and when you lose rapidly (I started my preop diet a month early), it is released causing possible break through bleeding. Yup. It happened to me.

It tapered off around month 5 and I am back to spotting around my regularly scheduled time. YAY!!!

I have an IUD that I'm about to get replaced next week. I haven't had a period since having it placed 5 years ago. Last night I started having cramps and sort of freaked out since I haven't had any in 5 years. I'm down 58 pounds and the thought did cross my mind about all that crappy stuff returning due to weight loss. Damn :(

I have PCOS and I bled for almost a year (before surgery.) My gyno suggested the surgery for me. I was bleeding because u had a polyp. I had to have a D&C and take Provera and then I finally got a little better. I've had about 5 periods since surgery and I was on my period during surgery. I'm three months post op.

For once in my life this is one female issue I DON'T have! I too have PCOS. In fact, when I was diagnosed it was pretty early on in PCOS research and my doctor actually suggested me for case study. ( I didn't end up doing it though) I am sort of text book with my symptoms. Anyway, after I was blessed to get pregnant and have my daughter ( first and only pregnancy at age 39) I had a D & C, thermal ablation and permanent birth control placement. I do still have my cycle, but it is drastically lighter than years past. Since surgery I haven't really seen any change either, which is fine by me. I wish you ladies luck who are still facing the red tide!!!

I have been sleeved for 12 weeks, I have had two periods lasting over 17 days each... so, 34-38 days out of 74. It blows.

I, too, have PCOS.

I should have shares in Tampax by now.. Loyalty scheme... Like a coffee reward card...

'Have two horrendously long periods - Get 4 boxes of protection FREE!'

Urrrghhh.... Anyone else have that annoying Bodyform advert music going through their head right now?!!!

This also happens a lot in ppl with anorexia. More than likely related to rapid weight loss but def call ur gyn. I work as a nurse in this field so just everyday conversation to me but if periods have been heavy, need to check bloodwork to see if anemic. Also, may need to add Iron or B12 to ur Vitamin regimine and may help with the tired feeling.

It can also be the opposite. Can completely stop periods. But def call ur doctor. Sorry my ADD goes in 50 directions at once!

I have PCOS too. I haven't gotten on birth control yet. I have migrains and I have to take the kind that a breast feeding mother can use (don't know the name). They told me that it had less estrogen, I guess. I go to my surgens office the 19th. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one, thanks for the advice! I'll call my gyn.

I have pcos too!! I don't have periods even on birth control, so I think I'm looking forward to having periods. As my estrogen are so low. What I'm struggling with is cystic acne and bad Hair loss. I'm hoping the sleeve will give me relief.

Hello all...I'm 18 days out from gastric bypass and I've been on my period a month now, as my period started when my wt loss started during the 2wk preop diet. I've had PCOS since forever which was bearable with birth control from ages 13-26 but I suffered from blood clots in both lungs 3.5 yrs ago which put an end to hormones for me. ImIn the last 3yrs I've seen multiple GYNs and a fertility specialist for my ridiculously long and heavy periods. D&C helped for 3wks then I started bleeding again. Although hormones are contraindicated for me, apparently progesterone only isn't super risky so I tried vaginal progesterone. This did nothing so I then tried progesterone injections which I did twice a day in my hips :( That didn't help either and it was then the fertility doc suggested endometrial ablation or hysterectomy for me...at that time a 29yr old single woman with no kids. Long story short, I held out and eventually it stopped after a few months. I go through long periods every so often and have landed in ER twice with dehydration and anemia. Living this way sucks. I'm outta options at this point. It's either hyste at 30 with no kids or continue to bleed...and bleed for God knows how long with hopes that this wt loss will help my hormones level out soon. *sigh* It's a difficult place to be in but I'm gonna hang in there and keep praying for the best.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
