I was originally scheduled for Gastric Bypass but canceled at the last minute. I just couldn't justify re-routing my intestines and I didn't want to deal with dumping and malabsorbtion for the rest of my life. So, I found a new surgeon and got the Lap Band. For me, it was the logical starting point.

It was the best decision I could've ever made for myself. No dumping, no malabsorbition (so I'm healthy), and my internal organs aren't cut up and re-routed.

I've lost over 230 pounds in about 20 months and couldn't be happier.

For me, the other options were just too invasive. I also liked that the band is removable if absolutely necessary, and I can have it adjusted as needed for the rest of my life. With the sleeve/bypass, if you stretch your stomach back out there's no simple adjustment to fix that, and once you're insides are cut out/ and or rerouted, you can't just put that back.

It's obviously a very personal decision for each individual. Just keep doing your research to find which tool you feel will work best for you...for both the short and long term.

Wishing you the best of luck with your decision!

i went into surgery thinking i was having the bypass. i was getting the bypass because it would deal with my diabetis better. but i came out of surgery with the band. they couldn't do the bypass because of adhesions and scar tissue on my small intestine. i am glad now that i have the band. the weight loss is slower but i am healthier than i would have been with the bypass. my diabetis is under control, and instead of 200 units of insulin a day i only take 30 units at night. in a few months we will be adjusting that because my fasting bs and average for the last 5 mos. is 100. by those standards i am doing great. good luck to you and your decision.

I don't see that forum. I went under all and couldn't find where they discuss all procedures.

Ditto!! I was also scheduled for the RNY, but cancelled 10 days prior to surgery…..for the same exact reasons. Though I added plication to my band surgery, I still sleep much better knowing that it can all be reversed. Once the other surgeries are done, they're done…..no going back. I know of too many who've had major Iron deficiency issues with the RNY, and the margin for weight gain over time is equal among all surgeries. Given that, I went with the least invasive.

Terry, I didn't know that -- that's wild! Waking up with a band instead. Glad it has worked out well for you. So great to have lowered that dose so dramatically.

Why did you choose the lapband vs. RNY. Just curious. I am trying to decide what is best for me.

Hi there, I struggled with my weight for twenty some years and knew I needed to do something as the diets just weren't working, nor exercise and dieting, etc. I felt I did all the right things with no result -- or a temporary loss only to gain more back, etc. (story of most of us here!). For me, the band was the only choice for me as I was not willing to do anything more drastic than that. I liked the option of being able to remove should it ever come to that -- and I want my stomach intact. I'm 52 and had never been an overnight patient in a hospital before. The procedure was easier than I thought it would be and I am very, very happy with my decision. I researched a great deal -- with the hospital but most of the more in-depth information came from this forum. I read posts like crazy and asked a lot of questions. People were very helpful. I've only been banded three weeks as of yesterday and I am a different person already. I have tremendous will power that I did not have before -- that's needed because I am suddenly an exerciser (who knew?). As for food, I don't even need will power right now as I am just not really hungry. I eat and get full. I don't think about food all the time. It's a miracle for me -- the whole idea that I am not preoccupied with food at all. Amazing. I wish you the very best. I think there is a lot of good information if you are able to sift through posts from people who may be noncompliant or have unaddressed issues or who do not go to their doctor as they should. It's very important that you have a good relationship with your medical professionals. Only you will know what's best for your body -- what's important is that you're decising you want to be healthy and have a whole different kind of future in front of you. Congratulations on that big decision in your life and best wishes in your research.

I chose the band because it was reversible and I felt it's affect on satiation response would be more effective in treating my insulin resistance than the malabsorption other procedures depend on for weight loss.

The slower weight loss has been a bonus since my skin's elasticity seems to be keeping pace with my weight loss so far, so I'm not overly concerned about needing cosmetic surgery for excess skin.

That is awesome! Sometimes I wonder why I wasn't successful. I have just started meeting people that have been successful with the band. I am 4 years out, and my struggle has been constant since being banded. I don't know why its been so difficult for me.

whatever WLS you decide to get,

use it as best as the doctor advises for best results and make yourself well..

as with with anything, results vary per person for whatever reason.

you will see those pro and con against whatever surgery and those who rally around one or the other and proclaim theirs rules the world BUT it boils down to you and what you want and what you are willing to do to make sure the WLS you get works for you

i chose the band (my dr added the plication).....i was too scared to cut my insides via bypass and this is the truth..17 months, nearly 150 pounds off....it works for me because i am doing the best i can with the wls i have.

During my initial meeting with the doctor he asked if I was a volume eater or a sweet eater, and being the type who hates to waste food, I would always have to finish what was on my plate. Volume equaled lap band, sweets equaled gastric bypass. I guess with the dumping syndrome from eating sweets, where small amounts of food with the band would suffice for me.

I was asked the same questions by my doctor and the therapist, when trying to figure out which surgery to have. I'm a sweet eater, so they determined that I was a good candidate for the RNY. I almost went for it, but settled on the band with plication. The bypass is just to scary, and any sweets I eat anymore, is Protein bars or drinks. It's all worked out, and I'm glad I went with my gut on what would be best for me in the long run.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
