First Fill...

Recommended Posts

Today was my first fill and I was a little suprised by my nurses reaction to the amount of saline they put in. I have been doing very well with my caloric intake and have not been feeling hungry but I received a 3cc fill today. I am feeling somewhat nauseated and my chest is tight. I am hoping this will pass as the day goes on. I was just taken a back by the nurses comments . She said "I thought you had some restriction, I am surpised at how much of a fill you needed.

Jl,

Hi there. Did you do your fill under flouro or did you do a Water test to determine how much fill was needed.

First, I wanted to give you some reassurances:

1) 3cc is a very typical starter fill. Whether the doc put it in at the time of surgery, or during your first fill, again, 3 cc is normal.

2) Since this is your first fill, you may be more sensitive to the fill. What is happening is the increased restriction around the stoma is putting pressure on your vagus nerve (as it should). However, with all the increased inflammation in the area, the vagus nerve can be aggrevated and send off signals to other areas it innervates (like the diaphragm and chest). These should subside as inflammation goes down.

If at any time you cannot pass fluids, or you cannot transition into solids with frequent regurgitation be sure to get an unfill. These symptoms should not persist for long.

Also, I hope that they gave you some instruction on drinking only fluids for at least 2 days than slowly intro mushies than solids. This way you do not further aggravate the stoma and cause occlusion.

I am an RN and her comment wasn't the most professional. Especially if she failed to follow it up with her rationale or explanation of her expectations. I say, ignore her hahaha.

Hope this fill helps you...and the symptoms subside by tomorrow :)

PS 4 years post surgery I still get nauseous with fills lol

My doc does 1 day liq 1 day mushies. I got a 1 cc fill today which makes me a total of 5 ccs. I felt a little funny at first. I had warm liquids today and so far I'm good. As my surgeon says just listen to your body..the amount of fluids is different amts for different people

I am so thankful for this site. There truly is nothing like reading what others experience so that you can have a reasonable expectation of your upcoming appointment. My first fill is next Tuesday and I really appreciate the insight of other Bandsters!

I have a either 3 or 4 fills for a total of 2.2 or 2.4 cc's. My doctor goes slow. After each fill I do 3 days of liquids, 3 days of mushies and then back to my regular foods. Each doctor does it differently. At my last fill in September my doctor removed all my Fluid to make sure it was the same amount that were on my records and it was perfect. My doctor is the only person that does fills.

Don't ever be afraid to ask questions.

Feel better.

Hi there! I got my first fill yesterday as well. My doc gave me 3cc's as well, he said that's the usual amount for the first fill. As for the nurse, pay her NO MIND. People will always find something to say. As Dory says in Finding Nemo "just keep swimming".

I got my first Fill today too, they were going to fill me up to 5cc's but the nurse was surprised that my band was empty and so only gave me 3. I'm just pleased with my self for losing 20lbs last month without a fill! Liquids , liquids, liquids!

I have appointments scheduled for fills weekly beginning 12/4. If I do liquids a couple of days then mushies, that only leaves a couple of days to figure out whether the fill is at a good restriction before I'm back there again -- am I getting this right?

I was told that I could come back in 2 weeks if I wanted, but not before. I guess each Dr or clinic has different guidelines, weekly seems a little close but I'm new so I'm no expert.

I haven't heard of too many doing weekly fills. I had my fill on Monday and I'm having regular foods today. I still feel I have to tread lightly cuz I'm in unchartered waters with this much Fluid in my band. If you don't feel ready for a fill when you go remember you can always tell your surgeon you want to skip one.

I got one half cc for my first fill. I was banded August 5th. I have no restriction and can eat anything. My next fill is dec 18th. My surgeon only does one half cc at each fill.

All of you guys are awesome really! So much advise I'm feeling better about my first full today. I got 2.5cc he had to let some out cause the Water swished back up but in a week if I don't lose weight he says he is going to adjust it again. Overall all is good.

Water always get stuck in my throat there at the fill appt but I never have them remove anything. I so desperately want to be tight. Call me crazy! LOL

After a day or so the irritation subsides & I'm able to drink & eat anything I like just as before the fill.

The first 5-7 days after a fill i can lose 3-5lbs

The second 5-7 days i regain them all back!

My fills are bi-weekly. Never heard of a weekly fill must be something new.

Yea I think he trying to get my weight moving then it will probably slow down. I want to be tight too. I shouldn't have had him remove anything. I'm so new at this I'm so afraid of the horror of slipping.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
