November fitness challenge

Recommended Posts

Wow since this whole change to Bariatric pal I have not been able to find this and wasn't getting notices anymore. What a pain but I finally got on a computer instead of my phone and started following again.

Last time I posted was 11/9 and had done 26 miles . I have done 16 miles since so Total for the month so far is 42 miles. Not nearly as close to 100 as I would have liked right now but thats okay as long as I am moving. I signed up for a 5K on Thanksgiving so I am excited about that.

It has been a good month of fitness. Each day has seen between 2-3 miles of running, mostly either sprinting for short distances (400 m intervals) or fast for longer durations (6 min average for 1 mile). Running a mile feels really comfortable now at race speed. My lifting has seen a slow progression of PR every week.

This Friday marks the end of our 1 month nutritional challenge at the crossfit box. We will also be doing a special chipper WOD that identical to the one from last month to see where we have improved. Most are taking on weight loss as a goal for the end of this challenge. I wasn't intending to and actually saw my weight climb by 5 lbs in last few weeks to hold stead at 182. Every day. I attributed the weight gain to lack of proper recovery / sleep / muscle gain, but not really sure of actual cause.

Today, I got on the scale this morning and it said 176. I checked and rechecked 8 times. Same weight. Interesting drop. Batteries are Ok. Not sure if it was because I slept more (actually got 8 hours instead of usual 6) or because of a chipper workout I did yesterday:

6 Sets Of:

Hang Clean + Power Clean + Jerk

then

14 Minute AMRAP:

10 Ring dips

200m Sprint

10 Pullups

200m Sprint

I got 6 rounds and, man, was that tough. My dinners have also been a little more on the "rich side" these last few months, but last night I had straight Turky (4 ounces). Maybe that did it? Who knows...

I have met one goal so far, I have upped my weights on all machines by atleast 5 pounds and some by 10 pounds. Very happy.

Have been able to do a 2 mile run so far - but to be honest I have slacked off on the running. I don't really enjoy it. But I did add yogalates which is for strength and flexibility which I really need more flexibility and balance. So happy with how things are going, but I really do need to try another run this week.

Just popping in with a current update:

117.3 miles

And looking at the calendar and knowing "about" how many miles I do each week, with being gone the week of Thanksgiving, I might actually fall short of my 175 goal. I'm going to step up my game a bit but I might actually not make it this month!

Made an additional 4.5 today. Puts me at 87.3.

And just for cheer. Isn't this a lovely Princess with Cinderella? Of course, I'm prejudice. :)

4.65 miles today...feeling pretty good. Having some uncomfortable feelings in my hips for some reason. Mainly when I first stand up. Once I get moving it feels better. Not sure what it might be. Anywho...my MTD now stands at 85.85 miles.

OK, I have a quandary and need advice.

My fitness goal is a 10,000+ steps per day average for the month of November; but I just started my strength training last week with my PT.

So now I'm doing an hour of cardio on MWF and about 30 min of cardio + an hour of strength training on TTh. On weekends, I'm doing whatever I can (still aiming for 10K steps), and trying to rest some too.

With the strength training days though, I'm gonna be chronically under 10K unless I exercise for like 2.5 hours! That can't be good at just 5 weeks out, can it?

Should I do the 10K steps on top of the strength training? Make up for it on weekends? Give up on ever having a rest/recovery day?

What are my priorities here?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
