Hello, I am new to the group! My surgery is scheduled for December 19th 2014

Recommended Posts

I am a 31 year old mother of 7, our children range in age from 13 to 15 weeks. I am very excited about the major changes that I have already made in my life, and the even bigger changes that are yet to happen. I am from The Harrisburg Pennsylvania area, and I'm having my surgery threw the Kunkle Surgical group. I was required to see a psychologist, dietician, and have a sleep study during the 3 month wait period for my insurance. I would love to make some friends in the group for support and motivation as I go threw this journey. During my waiting period, I started exercising regularly and currently do 10 miles a day between my treadmill, elipitical, and exercising. And I have found that the it works wraps really work as well and they feel really good to!

Hello and welcome.

Just want to clarify, is your surgery in 2014 or 2013? :) because it sounds like you are getting ready for it very soon :)

Also, FYI..this site is being updated so there are alot of kinks being worked out. You will not have access to blogs, pics, or live chat. So hang on tight until the administrators get us back up and running. Until than, peruse the forums for research questions and to engage the community.

Good luck in your journey

Way to go on the exercising -- that is really going to serve you! Congratulations on making this decision for a healthy future. I am being banded on Tuesday and very excited but of course a teensy bit nervous, too. It's been so helpful to be on this forum asking questions and reading the posts. Best wishes to you!

Hi mommy of 7 , I'm being banded on dec 17th I know what you mean about being nervous and excited. I feel so blessed that I have my insurance approval and surgery date after four years of trying! The things that really make me nervous is my addiction to food. I know I have a problem that I eat even when I'm not hungry then eat so much I feel sick :/ I'm also nervous because I've seen myself fail so many times with diets And exercising. ill be on my game for a month or so then something happens and I stop. I think having a buddy that's going through the same kinda thing might help keep me motivated :)

Congratulations. Mommy of 7 and welcome. I'm scheduled for surgery on Dec. 17th, so we will be going through the process at the same time. I am super excited as well for this new change and journey I am about to embark on. I am from New Jersey.

Hi Mommy of 7 and welcome! :D Typos... Aren't they just too much fun. ;) Congrats on making this decision for yourself and getting your surgery date. This will be one heck of a terrific Christmas (holiday) gift. :D I understand that jittery, ready to go feeling. I am scheduled to go on the 20th of this month and I am beginning to feel like a racehorse in a starting gate. I am so ready to do this. :D

Congrats, Mommy! Having just been through what you are going through now, I am happy for you getting to this point! I had my first pre-op visit in July, and was finally cleared through the process in mid October and was banded last Tuesday, 10/29/13. I recall my last pre-op visit as being among the most routine of any I had. Being the 'last' appointment I was expecting to hear an overwhelming amount of new information, but with all the classes/sessions/meetings/appointments up until that point, there really was not much else they could tell me. It was more a run down of how the day would go when I got to the hospital.

My surgical experience has been great so far. I know 'your mileage may vary', and there are people who have posted who are all over the map in terms of recovery time, discomfort, etc. Apprehensive going in for surgery? Of course I was, it is surgery under general anesthesia. I had the band installed, stomach plication (my doc refers to it as fungoplasty), and a hernia repair, so they were digging around more than they probably do in most cases. I was sore for a couple days and was taking the hydrocodone they prescribed, but by the third day I was only on liquid Tylenol for the occasional twinge. I am very mindful of not lifting things, not bending over too far, etc. But so far, on day 5 post surgery, I am quite comfortable, sipping away on my two week post-op liquid diet, and things are going great. Not sure if I am typical ... but I can certainly lend at least one vote in the 'I just had this done a few days ago and I would do it again tomorrow' column.

I am ready to get on with the rest of my journey, and I wish you luck on yours. Congratulations on getting this far!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
