Over month long plateau - Need to break through!

Recommended Posts

I am weighing in at 163 right now, and have been jumping back and forth between that and 165 for over a month. I weighed 169 at my last fill appointment, and only lost 4 lbs. I am feeling defeated! My goal is to get to 135-140, which is the recommended weight for my height of 5'2". I go for jogs every day or every other day, and I do no less than 2.5 miles in 30 mins. I don't eat Breakfast, I just have 2 or 3 cups of coffee. For lunch I may eat a piece of meat or some boiled eggs, and for dinner I eat a meat and veggie. No more than 1/2 cup of food whenever I eat. I track everything I eat on My Fitness Pal. I don't understand because I am watching what I eat, how much I eat, and I'm exercising. I even did a 4 mile walk/jog last Thursday, I'm pushing myself further every time I get out and jog. Has anyone been through this, that can give me some advice on how to push through this plateau?? I would greatly appreciate it!

Are your clothes fitting looser? If you've amped up your exercise program you could be adding muscle and still losing fat. One month is not much of a plateau once you get down to that last 25 lbs. If you burn off 500 calories a day more than you consume you could lose 4 lbs in one month. But that's 4 lbs of fat. If you're building/replacing that fat with muscle, the scale won't know the difference and will not show it.

It's this way for most of us. Those last lbs are incredibly difficult to shed and requires a lot of focus and intense control over how many calories we eat. Be satisfied with 2 lbs a month if you can get there?

sounds like your metabolism is copensating for the reduced calories and increased activity. eat something at breakfast it starts your metabolism. your metabolism is far more responsible for calorie burn than the few hundred calories you burn in exercise.. also your body will adapt to a level of exercise after awhile. try changing it up. increased and something different. weight lifting will help increase your metabolism by requiring calories after the exercise is over for repair. you don't have to get crazy with it just enough to tone up you don't have to be a body builder. good luck

Clothes are definitely fitting looser! I have thought that maybe I've just been losing inches, because I can see a difference in the last month in some areas shrinking. Just thought that it wouldn't last as long and I'd start losing lbs again. I'm all for losing inches. Guess we just get it in our heads that the number on the scale has to go down for us to be losing weight or getting healthier. Thanks for the advice!

I don't know how many calories a day I should be eating! The nurse practitioner at my dr's office was absolutely no help with that. They just gave me a list of things I should and shouldn't eat. I asked about calorie intake, and she said it's not about that it's about what I'm eating. No help at all!! Also, in the mornings I'm not hungry at all, and when I do eat my band is tight. Any recommendations on things that are easy to get down in the mornings? Thank you!

620 made a good point. Something I've done in the past and I've seen others here do it too, is to increase your caloric intake maybe up to 1400 calories a day for a weekend so that your metabolism increases, and then go back to maybe 1000 a day? Keep your body guessing with a varied diet and a varied exercise routine.

Still, your current routine will work too, it just may not seem to kick in as quickly?

i can't help with what will work well with the band. i won't get mine for another 9 days. i have been fairly successful dieting without one though and i was like you. never ate breakfast, but that was cause when i did it was the wrong stuff and made me miserable, plus i'd trade a half hour of sleep for making and cleaning up breakfast dishes any day. any way now i eat scambled egg substitute or something with high Protein. staying away from refined carbs and high sugar fruits works best for me.

i'm seven weeks into a plateau myself, we just need to keep our heads in the game. good luck

It certainly isn't shaved turkey as I just had and now I am feeling PAIN! I do best with a Protein Drink...Guess this will be the breakfast of Champions for me from here on out and OHHHHHH How I miss breakfast! My favorite meal of the day! :(

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
