Liquids 3 Days Post Op?

Recommended Posts

I just had surgery on Wednesday and I'm back home now, however I have a few questions.

I'm on the clear liquid diet and wanted to know how much I should be consuming, for instances yesterday on day two I couldn't even finish a caprisun, had ice cubes and had a small popsicle that's it.

Today I probably had about 6oz of gatorade and 6oz of broth and some ice cubes and that's all.

I can't imagine getting 64oz of Water in.

Also does the sipping stop or will that continue to be the case with drinking here on out?

Any reply will be helpful thanks!!!

I am two weeks out and I had a hard time getting anything down the first three days. I was not even hungry, I did how ever suck on ice chips and it took me three days to get down a hole bottle of gatorade lol! It will get easier and you will start to want to eat and drink. I still have a hard time making sure I get all my Water but I an working on it every day....good luck!

I still can barely get half a bottle of Gatorade down, as for my shakes manage 8 oz. no prob within 30 mins, Water difficult do not know why but seems to upset my tummy? But I keep drinking as much as I can which is only maybe 16- 20 oz a day. Trying hard to increase this, I can have creamy Soups now, have half cup again takes 30 mins to get this down. As for coffee, no cravings, but I do have half a cup of green tea once day. I am on my 2 nd week after surgery.

So I am on the morning of day 5 and I'm a little concerned as there hasn't been a day where I have had my broth or a drink where i felt omg I'm so full. I had 2 cup of noodles yesterday (broth only) at 2 different sittings and both times was able to drink the entire thing which was about 8oz with no problems in 10 minutes maybe. I've only been sipping because I'm afraid to go further as i don't want to be in pain. I also finished 3/4 of a 32oz Gatorade yesterday sipping throughout the day. I felt like i could have had more. At times i feel hungry as my stomach is growling and empty, no not the gas feeling actual hunger. On the other hand plain Water seem too harsh for me to drink. I don't know what to think, i weighed in yesterday and was 1# lighter from m DOS granted it was only day 4 but i haven't eaten food in forever it seems. I was losing more on the preop shake diet. I hope this expensive tool is going to work and give me restriction, I'm just a little concerned right now but may be jumping the gun? Any suggestions, tips or replys would be helpful.

Stina- have you called the doc? As you mention this is a expensive tool, don't take any chances... From what I've read most people can sip a few ounces the first couple of days. I would call them and maybe only drink Clear liquids for now. Am sure they will figure it out. Good luck and be positive!!

Stina I could barely get anything down and yes you're still hungry but have more broth ...i recommend a heartier broth..make chicken Soup home made and onlynhave the broth. What really made the diff for me was not the sodium junk it was the real deal broth...even if you buy from a local spot i think it will make you feel satisfied, I'm one month out and I can def consume more liquid than before still nowhere nearb64 oz...and don't fret over the scale your body is in shock let it heal and find it's natural fat burning state...good luck ooo and expect to eat or rather drink broth every 2hrs

5 days out and my pain is at a 4. However my wife is at an 8-9. She is feeling bloated and said she feels like her stomach is gonna "pop". Any thoughts?

I also have no problem drinking yogurts, broth, or Protein Shakes. Is this wrong? I drank a 12oz Protein Shake in 5-10 minutes with very little cramping.

Ok so I was one of those people who only had nausea, stomach gas and pain in the hospital. By day 3 I was able to drink 8oz of broth and a full 32oz Gatorade. I sipped for only 4 maybe 5 days thereafter I was able to take big gulps. I’ve never been one to get full off of 2-3 oz of broth. My nutritionist said I shouldn’t be getting full off of liquids anyways. She told me most people who just had surgery and are getting full off so little is doing so due to the gas/being bloated. So I started March 5th pre-op at 238, DOS on March 14th I was 228, 1 week out on March 21st I was 218, I started creamy Soups on the 23rd and went back up to 223 by the 26th. I started eating solids on the 30th (17 days out verses 21) and now as of today I’m back down to losing a # a day and am at 218. I haven’t had any problems with food up until today when I ate a few bites of rice, BIG NONO, I did it without thinking. So in a nut shell I’m down 20# since preop, 10# 20 days post. I have lots of restriction and overall I’m happy thus far. Hope to be under 200 soon.

So my wife and I are 10 days out and doing well with the creamy Soups but it's getting old. Any suggestions or ideas for something different? Do we need to do the full 3 week liquid diet? We both lost weight the first week and now have gone 3 days of losing nothing. Any input would be great.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
