Straws?

Recommended Posts

This is rather silly to ask, but did everyone stop drinking from straws? I quit caffeine and carbonated drinks months ago, but I'm sad to give up straws. My surgery date is september 11, so I guess I better get used to it with all the liquids I'll have to drink!

I was told no straws because they cause gas bubbles. But every surgeon is different it seems.

My doctor said "absolutely NO STRAWS". You can inhale too much air while drinking with a straw. I always used a straw to drink my soda. I do not drink coffee or tea but would drink 6-8 cans of diet pepsi lime a day. I was freaking out a bit because I did not want to give up my diet soda but I had to. I took a sip of the diet pepsi line the other day and it tasted like a bunch of chemicals - I think my taste has changed as well.

I drink from straws regularly now. I am 7 months post OP and started again with straws at 4 months post OP. I don't have any problems or pain. I know I won't drink the Water I need if I can't have it through my straw. Give it a try and see how you feel, it's really the only way you'll know. Good luck!

Maybe if someone has a swallow study-drink that nasty barium first with a straw, and then just drinking it...watch your pouch live and see what it does. I had one done two months ago, no straw, and it does stretch with large swallows, and swallowing air does the same thing. So, my doc had said no straws, so I use no straws. Do we want to fail all over a straw or carbonated drinks? Not I. It's not worth it. I don't want those 80lbs back.

Just met with my dietician and let her know that I do get in my 64 oz of Fluid but it's hard without the straw. She said it was ok for me to use one but just beware of how quick you suck the fluids down. Each person is different. So I'm gonna try it.

My surgeon said no straws - you take in too much air which can stretch the pouch. I know some folks choose to use them but I think you have to be carefull about "expecting" some kind of pain or other physical response to signal you that there is a problem. You could drink from straws without suffering any obvious side effects but that does not mean that you are not stretching the pouch from the additional air that you're swallowing.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
