Guidelines... Please help

Recommended Posts

My surgeon is amazing please don't get me wrong. However, I feel like he gave vague instructions on what to do. His guideline, after hospital full liquids, skim milk, Protein, sf Popsicles, strained Soups, Water water water, ect... Then he says 7-12 days post op puréed food, baby food, cottage cheese.... I know low cal, low carb but I'm not sure how many cal a day, how many carbs can I have a day. I don't know I'm so lost. I have a general idea of what I can eat, but I was hoping maybe y'all could help me. I want to be successful I need to lose 150-200 lbs!!! Like what foods are huge no no's, I know the obvious fatty high cal/carb. Also I was told no pills for headaches, so today I had my first follow up and I asked him about the no no's and he said I can take pills, Tylenol, aleve, Advil ect also I can drink through a straw (when I've heard many on here say that their surgeons said no straws) that those no no's are for gastric bypass.... Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!!!!

I agree it can be a little confusing. I'm still in the pre-op stage and still learning, but at one class, the NUT went on and on about chewable vitamins. I've been taking food-based, non-GMO Multivitamins for a little over a year now and asked if I could just continue those. She told me no and said chewable was best for the new sleeve. This week, she called me at home after my lab work came in to have me add Vitamin D and Iron. I asked about chewable and/or sublinguals, and she said pills were the best & most reliable bet and just fine on a new sleeve. So confusing!!

KEEP IT SIMPLE right after surgery. Focus on liquids and then Proteins. Ignore anything else for a couple months.

And do what your program says as best you can!

I have the same issue! My Nut and surgeon contradict each other all the time! Even the paperwork they hand out does! You can get sample diets online that I have used as a guide.

I am still on liquid and yesterday surgeon said not to worry about fat and carbs for at least 6 weeks!

Good luck

I'll letcha know. I have my 1st appt with the RD today at 11am (and I'm almost 8 weeks post op).

One thing that I've noticed that is different from my MD's advice from the others here is mine says not to do low fat versions of anything cept dairy products. Everything else (including mayo) is sposed to be full fat. Keeps u satiated a bit longer. And fat doesn't make u fat, thats the old thinking. Yes, there's more calories in a gram of fat than in Protein or carbs but those all come out in the wash.

And since doing so, I feel so much less deprived. Let me tell how exhilarating it is using regular salad dressing instead of fat free. Or worse - calorie free, fat free=taste free.

So the only low fat product I now use is 1% milk (oh, and light yogurt. I actually don't like regular yogurt). Can't do skim milk, reminds me of breast milk (see thru)

Shows how different our drs and RD's are...

I couldn't agree with you more. I honestly kind of worry about the lack of fats by eliminating so much. Everything in moderation. There are some things I just can't stand lower in fat, like cottage cheese for some reason.

I agree, we need good healthy fats in our diet. For one thing, that's how we can use fat-soluble vitamins! I don't eat artificially reduced fat anything (salad dressing, mayo, etc.). Have you ever read the ingredients in those things? They usually contain sugar, high fructose corn Syrup, and a laundry list of unrecognizable chemicals and frankenfoods. No thank you! I do watch my calories to make sure I am not going overboard and also keep my fats under 30 gm per day but do it without using fake "fat free" stuff.

I use extra virgin coconut oil to cook with and I don't use butter anymore...I spread coconut oil on toast (Ezekiel bread) and lightly dust with organic garlic salt...my whole family caght on and loves it! Look into "ghee" also. As for omegas 3-6-9 there are many flavored ones at GNC and health food stores, that and Vitamin E I put in my Fage yogurt easy and yummy!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
