I can all of a sudden eat more at 5 wks post op...Im scared....

Recommended Posts

Im 5 weeks post op and just went from liquids to soft foods a week ago. Up till yesterday, I was only able to eat maybe 5 bites of chili, 1 oz of cheese, 1 egg, etc. Went to Red Robin last Fri and managed to eat 2 bites of turkey from the sandwich insides and 4 fries. Was afraid of taking 1 more bite for fear I might vomit. Could only eat a few bites but was hungry again in. 90 minutes, forcing me to eat 7 to 8 x a day.

Yesterday I played poker at a Chinese restaurant and I was hungry. Within an hour I managed to eat a whole egg foo yung patty (maybe 4 oz) and wasn't necessarily full. This morning I ate 1egg, 2 pc of melba toast and a pc of sausage. Then I started eyeing hubbys plate. What the heck is going on? Is this normal? Wi.l I be hungry like this from now on? Im making myself avoid his leftover sausage or I could probly eat another.

I know for me it depends on the day. Some days, I am hungry and I eat all day. I can get down quite a bit, especially if I really chew up my food! No matter what, I've learned that in the end it is still up to you. You will have to push that plate away, you will have to say no to certain things. The surgery helps with that, but like they say, "its a tool" they gave us a smaller stomach but it's still in the same person. Just keep on going, and hey! you did great...you made yourself avoid eating another thing. That's control! Kudos!

I wouldn't worry too much about it. It is a good idea to be logging your food intake through this process because things do add up quickly...if you aren't already logging. I personally like myfitnesspal.

I am 7 months post op and my day varies quite a bit. There are days that I barely manage to get 800 calories and I feel overly full and other days that I've eaten 1300 calories and I am still hungry. As a female, my time of month affects it. Other factors that affect my calories/fullness/hungry-ness is how much cardio I have done in the day, time of day I wake up and go to bed, what types of food I have been eating (Protein vs. carbs etc.).

I wouldn't let it scare you just yet. Log your food and watch how hungry you are for about two weeks. If you are still scared, then there are lots of people on here that would love to help you because they have gone through the same thing.

I am almost 2 weeks out. Yesterday I had a day like that. I made chili and wanted it all day. I ended up eating about 12 oz total throughout the day. Trying to have a light day today.

Also, as your stomach heals (swelling decreases) you'll have more capacity. As long as you keep track, you should be fine. In the end, it's really a weekly numbers game more than a daily game.

Some days will be up and others down. So long as your choices are good and you are only eating until satisfied and not full, you should be okay.

Be careful with this. At 2 weeks your stomach is still very raw, most of us think we can eat a lot but really due to meds, swolen stomachs, etc, we don't feel how we are really hurting our healing process.

Are you taking an acid blocker? Sometimes acid will mimic hunger.

Yes, I take 20mg of Prilosec 2x a day. I can't be convinced that this isn't true hunger, btw. I know what hunger feels like! LOL...

Yeah, I'm also 5 weeks out today and back on "regular" foods (although mostly sticking to soft solids since I have the easiest time with those). I have only lost about 13 lbs since my surgery, and have been meeting my 80-90 grams of Protein and at least 64 ounces of Water goals with regularity. After reviewing my log, the NUT suggested that I might be eating too few calories, so I've upped my intake to between 800 and 1000 per day in the last few days. It will be interesting to see if there's a different outcome this week. Hang in there!! :)

Marfar, I can identify with the hunger! You might want to hit reset to get back on track. Record all your food choices including calories consumed and make sure you're getting exactly the amount of no calorie fluids your dr has instructed. Everything you're going through is pretty common, so this will pass. My own impulses have resulted in me filling out daily meal plans in advance so I don't graze or eat bad choices at restaurants. I feel that is necessary until I reach my goal, and maybe beyond. One thing that makes me lose my "hunger" is the idea of going backwards and having to lose the same pounds over again. Good luck!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
