My concentration in school was adult substance abuse/mental health/criminal justice. I went to school at 40' date=' have a buttload of loans that I will be paying for until I die. It took me 5 years of applying with the VA to get hired but after years in the social services field, I can tell you that working for the Feds is the only place you will make good money with good benefits unless you want to go into private practice. If you are still in school, I would suggest you attempt to get an internship. My supervisor came on as an intern 23 yrs ago and has never worked anywhere else. You will be able to work in any state anywhere regardless of where you are licensed. [/quote']

Thank you for the feedback! I really appreciate it. I'm looking into trying to get in with a good company, preferably the federal government, to maybe help with tuition.

Would this explain part of it??

We show that shift workers have higher BMI than day workers' date=' and shift working is associated with BMI, independently of age and work duration. This is an important finding since a higher BMI is associated not only with an increased risk for morbidity and mortality, but also with accidents and injuries at work.14,27 Our results are consistent with previous studies showing that the prevalence of obesity is higher in shift workers15 and that weight gain occurs in late-shift workers (evening and night),16 cleanroom workers changing from an 8 to a 12-h shift,17 and offshore workers under continued exposure to day–night shift work.18 Other evidence highlights a positive relationship between BMI and duration of shift work exposure.19 In particular, employees involved in shift working for more than 5 y had significantly higher BMI than those with no shift work experience.19 Weight gain in shift workers has been explained by several mechanisms, such as higher calorie intake,16 changes both in dietary habits (such as eating fewer meals and more snacks) and in the circadian distribution of food intake,16,28,29 lower physical exercise,16,30 and changes in sleeping habits.16

Moreover, rotating shift work has been shown to increase the daily cortisol secretion31 and to dissociate the cortisol circadian rhythm, with a progressive rise in cortisol levels during sleep (that is, normally, a resting phase).32,33,34 This seems to be an important point, if it is taken into account that central obesity has been suggested to have a hypothalamic neuroendocrine origin, with increased ACTH and cortisol secretion.35,36[/quote']

Oh I think there is no disputing there is a high rate of obesity amongst shift workers, thus the correlation. They just haven't been able to prove any causes. It's much like the correlation between skipping Breakfast and obesity. It gets mistaken as a contributing factor. It actually isn't, it's just that people who skip breakfast are more likely to not eat properly or care about their health the rest of the day, thus more likely to be obese. But whenever studies have been done to try to ascertain a link between the two, they came up empty. And all this is coming from the fact that my wife is a medical researcher so I hear about the faulty assumptions made by research studies all the time.....and we're getting way off topic of a very good thread so....I'm going to do my best to quit hijacking this particular thread.

Your comments on compensation are so true. I have a BS in Environmental Science and I work in Public Health (also not known for being a particularly high-paying field). Of my closest friends, one has an MSW and has been working in the field 2 years longer than I have and I make more than $10/hr more than she does, and another has been a therapist for a public agency for about 3-5 years longer than I've been in the field and I make about $5/hr more than she does. I don't have anything special in my background that would explain the pay discrepancy and I view the work as being roughly equivalent in level of responsibility and technical expertise. Both with MSWs. At least with the Feds, compensation is comfortable, benefits are good, and it's generally very stable employment (not withstanding the last few years).

I'm pre-op, my surgery date is 9/9. I work for a non-profit agency as a case manager with kids who are involved with the juvenile justice system and also have mental illnesses. I'm also a single mom to a 9 yo daughter and was in school working on my Master's in psych, but I'm taking a break from school for surgery, etc.

This may be a silly question, but how does one go about applying for a federal job? ☺

I hate people with prejudices against overweight people. Unless they walk in any one of our shoes they will never understand. People stink.

I know what you mean. Just beccause someone is overweight doesn't mean they are lazy, slow witted or bad at their job. There are even people on this forum who will even say that they won't go to a salesperson or doctor is overweight. How silly is that?

I'm a nurse practitioner living in Houston. Had band to sleeve conversion almost three months ago and the next day my daughter got her sleeve. We both used Dr. Ortiz with Obesity Control Center in Tijuana, Mexico. Both our experience there and recovery at home went as smooth as glass. I am finally experiencing a new more healthy relationship with food.< /p>

I am a physical therapist for 28 years. I am about 13 weeks out and about 60 lbs down. The more I lose the more active I am. I really am relearning how to eat and it just keeps getting better.

Generally USAJOBS.gov Be aware, though, it's your typical governmental website, with a ridiculously complicated required password that you have no hope of ever remembering without a photographic memory and you'll be required to change it so frequently, you might consider dedicating an entire spiral notebook just to keep track of your current password.

Good luck!

Sorry, shoulda finished reading posts before duplicating.

My hubby spends a lot of time surfing USAJOBS as he's federal and we've been through the process many times. Gotta move to move up, so to speak. He could answer questions if you want to PM me.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
