feast day calories

Recommended Posts

OK, we have skimmed this topic a couple of times... so I'm going to lay it out here.

I have my MFP set up to figure my calories to lose 1 1/2 pounds a week. I did not lose that or even 1/2 pound a week on that much. (1200cals) I also let my fit bit walking and other exercise calorie burn to be added to my total cal allotment a day (1200-1600 cals a day including exercise cals). That is what I eat on feast days. Now I eat around 700-1100 cals a day LESS on fast days.

This is not what the 5:2 people recommend... they recommend eating "normal" or TDEE on feast days ,and then if you don't lose, you can count your calories on feast days too. Most of us eat quite a bit less than that. My TDEE is supposed to be around around 2150 - All energy expended a day. What do you think about this?

Well I think this is the one area that all of us are kind of winging it... Have you tried going up to TDEE at all? Before I started 5:2 I slowly went up closer to mine, which is 1575 ( I don't count exercise) Which I'm not eating always unless its a crap day..

TDEE includes exercise. BMR is what your body burns just laying in bed. My BMR is around 1600. When I was adding calories to my diet trying to get it up to my TDEE I started gaining weight, and chickened out, and lowered my calories again. These numbers were done from charts, and a BodPod session I did towards the end of my weight loss the first time.... Obviously, they really don't work that well. Eating 1350 on feast days and 500-550 on fast days is working for me right now. I don't have much of a problem with that... but it is quite a bit less than the 5:2 people had in mind. Some of us are eating closer to TDEE on feast days, and some (spell the Georgia!) is eating quite a bit less some days....and losing more as well.... Im not sure what this conversation is about, but I do think about it now and then, and wonder what it all adds up to. I am happy that the 5:2 is working for me, Im usually not that hungry if I plan everything, and fast days are not that hard if I don't have other social events going on at the same time. Really, we are already eating in a life extension way to a degree... limiting calories daily... the fast component just adds one more layer to it. It will be interesting to see how this works for maintenance... going to 6:1 or even 13:1to maintain.... its not a true test, but the week I went on vacation, only fasted one day, ate what I wanted, I maintained my weight.

I should of clarified my TDEE including a little exercise is 1832. for reckless weight loss it's 1300

I really think its got more to do with the resting periods myself and mixing up the calories no matter what they are..

I had my test taking at my band doctor's office on Thurs. I am not sure about TDEE

but my resting metobolic test came out at 1300 calories. So I have to eat less than that to lose, right? If I exercise, that gives me more calories for the day.

I am trying to stay under 1300 calories on non-fast days. I can't call them feast. That's what got me fat, lol. Otherwise I am sure I would gain back what I lose on fast days.

I can't really get up to my TDEE either so I think it's ok. We have to make concessions because of our reduced stomach.

Many sources say you should not eat below your bmr. To lose weight you eat between your BMR and your TDEE. Most days of the week I eat below my BMR. I have tryed to get it up there, and sometimes I have been able to eat 1600 without gaining, but not at this time. Perhaps in Maintenance!

feed, I don't know what you're talking about. I thought they were basically the same thing.

BMR is how many calories your body uses at rest...TDEE (I think it stands for Total daily energy expenditure) is how many it uses adding everything else you do as well during the day, exercise, walking, cleaning house, moving around at all...

I am at 1200 now on Feast days. MFP dropped me from 1300 to 1200 a few weeks into 5:2 after losing some pounds. I had set it up to reach goal of 150. I know this. If I eat anywhere above 1300 I gain weight!!!

I era rely ever even get to the 1200 and if I don't exercise and watch WHAT I eat on the feast days I will gain. I am eating very clean these days. No fast food, no junk food and healthy Snacks like fruit, SF Popsicles, or the occasional Fiver One 90 calorie bar.

I take these to mean on feast days you still eat under your maintaining calories...

Looks like it to me! What page is that on? Looks like I'm right on the money.

That seems kind of counter intuitive... if you want to stay the same eat what you need to stay the same for 5 days a week, and eat 1/4th of that 2 days a week.

That's just from a e book that has the very basics and a few recipes.. Not the main books that we have highlighted here.

I think I need to read more because I'm getting conflicting info on the main site... So that page that I posted up there may not be true.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
