Scared to "eat" anything more than broth or water...

Recommended Posts

Ok, I'm 5 days post op. For the next 3 1/2 wks I'm on a full liquid/hi Protein diet. Which includes: Watered down juices, Soups wit no chunks, watered down cream of wheat, greek yogurt, sf Jello, sf puddings, and sf popsicles. The onlt things I've tried so far is chicken broth, Water and Propel 0. I'm so scared of popping my staple line. Plus, everytime something colder than room temp goes down it feels like lava. I'm terrified of eating a popsicles for fear that I might damage something going down.

I'm not really 'hungry" but "empty" if you know what I mean. I managed to get in about 40 oz of water yesterday and 30 gms of protein, about 1/2 of my lower end goal. I'm still in much post op pain (had to take an embedded band out of my stomach before being sleeved) and still haven't gone "potty". Took 2 doses of metamucil yesterday and one so far today. Nothing. When should I start worrying about it?

Started with 1 topic and veered into a 2nd. Sorry...

If your doctor allows, I would suggest milk of magnesia... The metamucil stuff seems to make me very uncomfortable with all the Fiber soaking up all my Water and stuff.

You were sleeved the same day as me, right? Tuesday? I've been having 98% fat free cream of celery Soup made with fat free milk (for protein), won ton Soup ~ Soups all strained, cream of wheat, Water, popsicle, premiere Protein vanilla or chocolate shake, & today I had a 1/2 container of the itty bitty snack Pack sugar free Chocolate pudding. Used to be able to eat 12 of those (haha) at one time & I could barely eat an entire half today! My incisions hurt a bit depending how I get up & sit down but other than that, I'm almost starting to feel normal again (YAY!!!) Maybe you're doing too much too soon? I've got to say, my boys have really picked up their pace & have helped me since I've gotten home from the hospital! I'm so grateful!

Hope you feel better soon & try not to be afraid to eat what the doc says you can eat. They know.

hi there - i recognize you!!

got rid of that darn lapband and now you are entering sleeveland!!!

always room for another pretty face!!! -_-

"try" not to be terrified!!!

easier said than done

if you feel better only drinking at room temp, thats ok!!!!

i've heard others write similar things, easier to "down" liquids at room temp

if cold,( popsicles msp :( ) or anything bothers you - don't do it silly head ^_^

go by your comfort :)

continue to drink as much Water as you can, but so early PO many people have troubles/concerns

as far as your "potty problem" - give it a few days

metamucil hopefully will help :)

any time you/anyone has a medical issue - its always best to call the doc (thats what he's there for)

listening to advice from the board is good - but IMO if you are concerned about anything - call the doc (even if you think its a silly issue/question)

most people feel better daily - gotta give it time :(

hopefully you'll start to feel better sooner than later :)

remember (as you could forget) you just had major surgery!!!! :o

you survived those problems you had w/the lapband

the sleeve should be a piece of CAKE

hope you and your problems improve soon

good luck

kathy

Yes, I was sleeve on Tues the 16th. Post op pain has been alot more than I bargained for (much more than lapband 4 yrs ago). I'm wondering if digging the band out of the stomach (it had imbeded in my stomach) caused the increase of pain or if I'm just a big baby? I live with chronic back pain (even had spinal surgeru 13 yrs ago), but nothing as bad as this. Hubby just went to the store to buy stool softeners. Thank God...

I went from band to sleeve on wed the 17th. Mine wasn't embedded thank god. That alone sounds so painful. I am still in quite a bit of pain as well. Getting up and sitting down hurts the most. As well as the gas pains. I haven't tried to eat much either. I've done the broth thing, Water and Jello oh yeah and the yummy Protein Shakes. I wouldn't rush into things. My surgeon said liquids only for the first 7-9 days and that's what I plan on doing as much as it sucks. I'm terrified to pop my staples too. Umm no thanks.

My doctor sent me home with Miralax and was told to use it once a day for the first ten days. Not a big deal since it mixes into Water and has no taste and it did the trick today.

That could very well be. I didn't have a band to "dig out" of my stomach (OMG, I shivered just typing that!) Please call your doc. They really don't mind. They expect to be on call when they're on call. Your doc will feel better making you feel better, so please call if you're feeling something too painful or something isn't right. ProudGrammy should be a psych she's so good at passing out info! She's so right! Today is day 5 ~ surgery was Tues & today was the first time I got out of bed without moaning & groaning all by myself! I've had to have my husband help me pull me up. I came downstairs & making Decaf coffee to mix with my Protein shake. Hope to go to Sam's Club this morning before it gets busy to buy more Premiere Protein shakes which are $4 off a 12 pack thru today. Then I hope to sit at my kitchen table & coupon for those less fortunate than me! I want to make a big donation in honor of my getting thru this surgery alive! I really feared death & leaving my kids with no mother. My husband may have to do the shopping part of my couponing but he knows how important it is for me to donate to those in need.

Please let us know how you're doing & please, please, please, don't hesitate to call your doc. Sunday is a GREAT day for him/her to hear from you! ;-)

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
