how to begin at the gym

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. I'm 5 weeks post-op and want to start the gym but I'm very intimidated. I've never been a workout kinda girl, but I feel that person in me :) What is the best way to get started? I can't afford a trainer but I don't want to look like a fool of I go. Help.

I forgot to tell you something. I've been a member of 3 different gyms since 2005 and not one single time did anyone harass me, ridicule me, or ever say anything negative. What I have gotten several times is people saying things like "you're doing a great job" and "keep up the good work". Don't worry about looking like a fool - we look way sillier with a box of donuts on our laps complaining about our weight than we do at the gym doing something about it!

I tried yoga last week! I had my Achilles repaired last September so I couldn't do more than half of the class :(

Thanks everyone for your advice. I have a treadmill at home but it gets boring.

Understood - gyms have a wide variety of cardio machines you can use. My advice above would be fine for all. Also might want to consider swimming or just walking laps in the pool.

Just my opinion but check to see if you have a planet fitness in your area, its 10.00 a month and a fee in june its a cheap way to see if you can hang with it; which im sure you can :)

I used to love working out, then I started school, had to study for exams, and just let life get in the way. Now 2 years later, and 3 months after surgery I WANT to get back in the gym, but oh my gosh it is sooo hard to get started again. I have been walking 60min everyday since the surgery and Im down 55lbs. I KNOW I can lose more if I just start weight training again. It is so hard to start up again, and believe me when you do, you will feel so good about yourself. I know I did the first time I started working out. There isn't much to the treadmil, I LOVE the elliptical machine, most ppl don't like it, but I LOVED it. I have always like lifting weights, so I know in order to tone my body I need to include weight training as well. It is hard to start a work out program with no one beside you (support system). My friends who start with me always quit after a week or so. I think that is what is holding ME back, no support system, but I need to get over that and "just do it". haha You got this, just start slow and listen to your body. It will tell you if you have over done it, or not doing something right. Thats what the employees are there for, to help you out. Good luck!!

U know when I first banned; which I have since been convert to sleeved on 6/25/13. I found that curves gym worked great for me. Its not to hard of workout, only 30min and 3 times a week.

My son goes to the YMCA. New members gets an hour with a trainer for free. Afterwards' date=' it's 20 an hour. I'm hoping I'll be able to go and learn a few things in an hour.

The Bariatric Center I chose has a gym and patients can use it free for 2 weeks. They show you exercises to do at home or you can continue using their gym. I'm not sure of the cost after the trial. I plan to go a few times, but they are over an hour away.

I agree with you about being intimidated. I've never stepped foot in a gym and I'm definitely not the blonde Barbie in her cute little workout clothes either. LoL[/quote']

I would suggest Curves for women for anyone. Its all female, only 30min (which I love...lol) and only 3days a week.it works

Most of the time when you join the gym they will offer a fitness eval with a trainer and the trainer will show you how to use all the equipment

They do offer one hour free with a trainer when you join but how will I ever remember all that? Lol.

I went in yesterday to check it out & get prices. I have to say I didn't like the feeling in there.

How much do you all pay for gym membership.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
