Is this a normal thought presurgery? I can't stop thinking..what if I die and my kids don't have a mom all because I wanted to be skinny? I'm a nurse so I know the risks of surgery and I actually had a patient once who stroked while having gastric bypass and now she's thin but she poops and drools on herself in a nursing home all day. Does anyone else worry about dying or am I the only nut?

Totally normal, IMO! I didn't really get much in the way of nerves until the moment I was being wheeled into the OR. It was then I just started to sob uncontrollably, terrified I was going to leave my baby motherless. My doctor was amazing, I had absolutely no issues post-op, and am thrilled with my results.

Any procedure is going to have risk' date=' and it's something that should be considered prior to surgery. I still see the surgery as something that was saving my health. I have diabetes & my blood pressure was high. It was a very slim chance that something was going to happen during surgery. It was a reality that my life was going to be impacted by the diabetes & blood pressure. I tried to lose weight on my own in the past & it came back. This was something that I needed help with & I got it.[/quote']

Hi Andi, like u I view the surgery as saving my health. I also have diabetes and hbp, along with a long list of other things. I'm doing this to get my health straight. If I don't I might not be around for my kids which scares the Crap out of me!

I felt that way too. I've felt that way any time I go in for surgery. What helps me to move past it is to write letters to my loved ones' date=' especially each of my kids. I know it's morbid, but at least I'm not leaving things unsaid and they'll know I loved them.

The truth is any of us can die any day. We could be hit by a car or have a freak fall. That doesn't keep us from living our lives. Most of us do this to improve our quality of life.[/quote']

I actually thought about writing letters to my three children, but I can't get past the thought. I want to just ball my eyes out thinking about what to say to them. This is especially hard when my 11 year old told me that she didn't want me to have the surgery. I haven't given up the thought I just need to gather my thought together and figure out what I want them to know if I die. So hard to think about....my children are my life and I'm there life too

Actually ended up in the hospital 2 wks ago (totally wls unrelated) and talked to the social worker. Im only 46 but made out an advance directive just in case. My 46 yr old 1st husband died 6 yrs ago without 1 and I had to make the decision. I don't want to put my husband thru that same thing.

I think the mortality rate for the sleeve is less than .25%. U have a better chance of dying in a car accidnet than having the sleeve done. Everyone knows someone who knows someone who died after bypass.

I understand how u feel. But I think we have a better chance of dying from weight related issues than the surgery itself. Good luck

Dying during surgery was my only worry. It scares me to be put to sleep and worry about not ever waking up. But I'm still here, alive and kickin'. And 75 pounds lighter!

I didn't worry about this at all. I was more concerned with dying from obesity related issues than from surgery, after all, the risks were way higher if I had continued without the surgery.

I think that goes through most of our minds, but we are doing the surgery to live a longer healthier life. The mortality rate nationally is less than 1%. Prior to being sleeved, I had neurosurgery where my surgeon was worried about me at almost 300 lbs. Unfortunately I have had more than my share of surgery over the last 6 years, but I am still here to talk about it. Whatever you decide, I wish you the best.

Ive thought the same and I was the mom and dad to my twin sons, they are the reason that I didnt have surgery til now, who was going to take care of them if "it" were to happen...now several years later my babies are 21 year old grown men on their own, I felt I did the best I could to raise them on my own but now its MY turn to better my health. best of luck to you!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
