fascinated by changing taste buds!

Recommended Posts

I haven't had my surgery yet but I read over and over in posts that people don't like foods they once liked before having surgery. Is there some scientific reason for this or what? It's really a strange phenomena. Not just things that are no longer good for you like sweets but all kinds of foods.

Ben and Jerry haven't treated me very well, either! But I keep going back! LOL

My taste buds have changed. I know it sounds bad and to each his own but late at night I crave a little salty crunchy stuff like chips. I have a handful and move on instead of beating myself up. I don't worry about my weight. My body lets me know what I need and I've lost 99 lbs so I'm happy.

If you can have a handful and not have it become half a bag, or tempt you to have other high carb, low nutrition foods, then it sounds like a perfectly reasonable way to treat yourself at this stage of the game. Just keep an eye on it to make sure that portion size doesn't creep up, or become a handful in the afternoon, and another one before dinner, and the one in front of the tv later in the evening!

I don't know if I necessarily dislike foods that I loved before, but I can say there's food that I don't want out of anger (that's the best way I can describe it). Like, my husband and I used to eat out all the time- hibachi fried rice was my favorite food group- now, I'm disgusted by the thought of it. I'm mad that I ate so much of it the past few years. Hopefully that attitude continues.

But I used to think Greek yogurt was disgusting, and I eat it now...?? The thought of it having more Protein makes it tastier. Lol

I used to love iced tea with sweetener like splenda or sweet and low. Now all tea tastes like dirt to me. Even tried a drink of my hubby's McDonald's sweet tea (used to love it when I could have it) and it tasted like dirt, too. Don't know what it is. Certain smells now make me nauseous. coffee is the biggest one. YUCK! Walked by krogers deli yesterday and the smell of their fried chicken made me nauseous, too. So yes. Taste changed for me, plus smells of food.

I think it's the hormonal changes. The same thing happened when I started on thyroid medication. The kind of coffee I liked changed (and it's never tasted as good as it did before), and carbonated beverages tasted less sweet. There were some other changes, but they're not as marked as they were before. So I'm thinking the lack of ghrelin is what creates a different experience of food.< /p>

Just a thought... It's our bodies wanting what it needs. I used to love anything sweet, now I just want anything with Protein in it

Totally agree! I'm always craving meat now instead of carbs!

Have you tried the mini rice cakes? They come in a lot "chip" flavors like sour cream and onion, etc. They're definitely not chips, but they're much lower in carbs and taste good -- they satisfy the crunch for me.

I'm almost 6 weeks post surgery, and I have noticed it with what I drink. The only thing that really tastes good to me to drink is Water (thank god it's water!) I no longer like Crystal light, G2, juice, etc...all the things I enjoyed prior to surgery (besides diet soda but I'm not doing carbonation) I don't know if this effect will wear off over time as I get further from surgery. But I tend to think that the longer I can stay away from sweet stuff (real sugar or fake) the less likely I am to want it.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.
