I had to write a paragraph to my surgeon explaining my reasoning for surgery, my paragraph was a full page letter. I did this surgery because I want to live to see my great grandchildren, I want to set a better example for my teenage son and in turn that will set a better example for those grand kids and great grand kids to come.... a long long long time from now. I also did this surgery so I can ride roller coasters with my son, so I can sit an airplane seat without being embarrassed or having to ask for a seat belt extender, so I can run a mile (because even as a kid I never have) so I can play roller derby again, so I can volunteer for the search and rescue, so I can be an inspiration to someone else, so that I can save someones life as a nurse. I also did it so I can feel beautiful, so I can improve my self esteem, wear smaller jeans, wear a bathing suit without being embarrassed. I would be lying if I don't look at clothes in my dream sizes, or that I don't dream of the day that I can buy in the regular sizes.

I'm 23 and have no health problems. I'm doing this to look good now and to stay healthy in the future.

I did it for both health and looks. My fat disgusted me. It was also beginning to impact on my very positive self esteem, which is a crucial factor in mental health, as I became increasingly disappointed in what I had allowed to happen to myself. I had no health issues from my obesity, but they were looming on the horizon if I didn't make a change.

When you see the same people who claim they did it for their health talking about saving for plastics, you know there is some 'doin it for looks' in there too ;-)

Your definitely not alone. I started this journey fire the looks & then found out how bad my health was getting. By the time I had surgery it was for looks & health, but mainly looks. Thisdivawantsherbodyback

I definitely have health as my primary motivator. I'm a type 2 diabetic and have high cholesterol. I'd be lying if I didn't admit that the side benefit of looking better didn't play into this, though, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Looks, I really want to look better! :D

Granted being able to get off a ton of meds IS a bonus.

I did the surgery for health.... I'm going getting a full body lift and perky new boobies for looks.

Hear! Hear! (or is it Here! Here!? Good think I wasn't an English major...)

Anyway... What she said!

i think it is probably a combo for most people. i have high bp and have been on meds but i can usually get off of them with minor weight loss that i am able to do by myself. i dont have other weight related issues but feel that i would get them with time and that i am more tired and pained than i should be at 32. a very large motivator for me is wanting to like how my body looks for the first time in my life. that is a huge reason for me to get the surgery, that is why i dont have it scheduled yet and already am spending time on looking into my next surgery(s) and where this mommy makeover will occur. i am honestly much more excited about the idea of liking what i see when i look in the mirror than getting off of blood pressure meds.

I would say my #1 reason for doing it was my mental health (didn't want to feel depressed anymore), #2 was look, and #3 is health. Not gonna lie!

Well since I was the OP in the thread she is talking about we all know I did this for my health. I believe everyone is beautiful regardless of what size they are so for me the looks thing doesnt make any sense but if it helps you feel that you look better that's great! I was told by the person who did my psych eval that she doesnt pass people who do this merely for looks. This was after my eval. I know I will look different but I will never say better.

Edit: and the only reason that I repeated it over and over since you mention that is because people ask why did I get this surgery... and I repeat to be healthy. Its like a crime on this forum if your big to love your body and the way you look.

After reading pages and pages on a previous topic about "regretting this whole thing' date='" the OP repeated over and over about doing this for her health....not looks.

Am I the only person who did this to look good? Yes, the health benefits are WONDERFUL...no arguments there. But I went into this because I wanted to look better..which in turn makes me feel better...physically and mentally.. Maybe it's my age...60...but the closer I get to the end of my life...the more I wanted to end things looking the best I can. My biggest fear is that people would file by my casket saying..."she never did lose that weight.". Lol![/quote']

Yea looking better naked was a huge motivation ;) mission accomplished lol jk

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.
