Question for the sleevers over 6 months +

Recommended Posts

I'm at 9 days post op right now and having some issues with my tummy not appreciating certain foods LOL My question is...did any of you experience this in the beginning and can now eat what you couldn't stomach then?

Are you able to eat pretty much anything now? Or is this something I will have to live with for the rest of my life?

At 9 days, I was still on liquids....my plan got me back on solid foods at 6 weeks.

At 7 months I can eat pretty much anything that I want. I haven't found anything yet that disagrees except overly sweet or overly greasy. Since neither are particularly healthy, I don't eat them any way.

What have you been eating? Just a few days after surgery, your stomach will be extremely sensitive. In fact, it is not at all healed, so you need to be extremely careful that you don't injure yourself. When you say that you aren't tolerating things, I hope you don't mean that you are vomiting. That is not good at this point.

Did your doctor give you a post-surgery diet? Please follow it precisely. I am about a year out, but I think you should still be on full liquids.< /p>

To answer your question: over time you will be able to eat more and more foods, though there likely will be some that you do not tolerate and some that you no longer like. For some reason, I cannot handle eggs now and pork is difficult for me to digest. I also get very ill if I consume much sugar. But overall, most things I can have.

Hang in there and take it easy. Don't rush things. The time will pass sooner than you expect.

Your tastes and types of food your stomach can handle will change for sure. It took me a year before I could stomach eggs again. They made me sick as a dog just smelling them. Ice cream also made me nauseous with just a tiny taste, but no problem now. Though after going through that I don't even want it anymore. I eat pretty much anything I want now, but I still take a PPI med before bed. And I of course eat almost no bread. I choose to not eat certain things, but not because of my sleeve.

I'm still on full liquids until Monday when I start the puree stage. I have my Soup, pudding and Jello too. My stomach seems to not like the Protein shakes..and I'm thinking the creamy Soups are a problem. Thank God I'm not vomiting, but I am "dumping". I'm not sure what to do about the Protein Drink issue...not sure how else to get the Proteins in?

It's good to know there is a light at the end of the tunnel...

The Protein powders can be a little harder on the stomach for some people. unjury makes an unflavored protein that you can put in your soups You can try some isopures protein cut with Powerade zero. Also New whey makes a protein shot that is 40 gs of protein in a tube. Syntax makes some flavors other than chocolate and vanilla and others on here really like them, although I am not a big fan. You can also try the RTD Proteins like Premier or EAS.

I was eating baby food, cream of _______ Soups, my Protein drink, and queso fresco at 9 days. I could barely tolerate 1/4 cup of anything for a while.

Now at 6 months, I eat whatever I want when I want. High fat foods make me sick, like Cheetos or Chinese food. I tend to eat mostly Protein with a side of cheese lol

Thanks for the suggestions! I have the Premier since it's 30 grams in one little carton, but that has me running to the bathroom too. I guess I'll just keep trying different ones...

Have you tried Greek yogurt? Fascinating amount of Protein in such a lil' container - I've found it to be helpful in my "full liquids" stage (ONE MORE DAY THANK GOD!). Luckily, yogurt is on my list of approved foods at the moment. I'm not a fan of the plain yogurt, but the flavored ones are divine!

My stomach was all sorts of messed up the first couple of weeks! Everything went through me.

I can eat anything now no problems.

Oh and watch the sugar alcohols in the pudding and such.

Isopure ready to drink is pretty good. It's the clear type so not frothy and gloppy. Tastes like weak Kool-Aid to me. That might sit better on your tummy.

Protein pump inhibitor- like Nexium- to keep your stomach acid down. I still take it 3.5yrs post-op. Had a scope last year and doc put me on a prescription form.

Has anyone tried New Whey Protein? The one that comes in the tube? Do you dilute that or pour it over ice? How does it taste?

Yes, I like the whey Protein tubes! I dilute them in Water with a few ounces of the tube.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
