Thought I would lose weight faster- trying to stay positive

Hi everyone-

I spent a lot of time on this forum when trying to decide if to go through with the sleeve and really appreciate everyone's opinions and information. I ended up getting sleeved on May 22. I spent 5 years trying to work off weight with every diet and pills available. I was hospitalized for a month with my last pregnancy due to pre term labor and got Magnesium sulfate IV drip 24hours per day. This ended up both stunting all functions including metabolism and causing late onset gestational diabetes because it stunted insulin function. After being thin all of my life- I gained 90 pounds by the end of that pregnancy and was never able to work off the weight. Its been a very long and depressing process.

After my GP suggested I do the sleeve and did some intensive research and a month later had it done. Today is my 3 week anniversary. I have lost 17 pounds- 10 of which happened in the first week, 5 at the beginning of the second week and for the last week and a half only 2 pounds.

I'm very grateful for every pound lost, but I am having a difficult time understanding how at 500-600 calories per day I have not lost more than 2 pounds in the last week and a half. I start to get really nervous that just like all the diets I did before didnt work, this won't work either- and there are no more options after this.

I am trying to stay positive and keep up with correct food intake. 70-80grams of Protein, 500-600 calories and low carbs and sugars.

Any experience that you may have or know of thats similar would really help! Please share.

How much did you lose your first week and 1/2? A lot of people have a stall after losing a bunch. I was sleeved on may 23rd so we r close

HI! 10 pounds down in the first week, 5 at the beginning of the second week and for the last week and a half only 2 pounds.

I know its easier said than done but patience is all I can say. I freaked every time weight loss slowed but as soon as I said I don't give a @#$% no more it moved down. Keep up the great work and try to weigh once a week only and measure your self too. :)

Your body is adjusting to SO MUCH! Surgery and calorie reduction is putting your system into overdrive and it's thinking it has to save you. So it ain't gonna give it away too easily. Be patient and start getting used to the new healthy lifestyle and eventually the weight will go down.

Thanks for the feedback. What is the longest stall you guys had? And do you think its so normal to have a stall so soon after surgery? It seems like everyone has their biggest weight loss in the first month....

I was sleeved the 22nd also. So far I have lost 20 lbs. 15 the first 8 days, then very slowly lost 2 lbs. I just got back into the gym and dropped 3. I say your on track. I know for me I was hoping to lose more, but again happy with every pound lost. When I had my follow-up appointment I had already lost the 15% of body fat that I was intended to lose by week 6. It'll happen for us!! Keep going and don't get discouraged!!!

kcolli28- wow we sound pretty similar. :rolleyes: Maybe doing some cardio is whats missing from the mix for me. I feel really good with foods and am able to take in tiny bites of chicken breast which is really helping with Protein intake. Can I ask you what a typical daily menu is for u?

Absolutely!!

Breakfast- egg beaters (1/4 cup)

Between Breakfast and lunch- Protein shake (8 oz)

Lunch- cottage cheese (1 oz) and peaches in peach juice ( I usually only get like 3 bites in)

Between lunch and dinner- milk (8 oz)

Dinner- 1 oz flaky fish and about 4 green Beans

Then Ofcourse tons of Water between.

My cardio right now looks like 30 minutes on the treadmill (walking) and 30 minutes on the bike I then also try to do some weights but I'm usually pretty exhausted after all that. I hope this helps!!!

I'm having the same problems. I was sleeved 4/16. Lost 12 lbs on pre-op diet and about 5 pounds first month post-op. My doctor is concerned that I'm not eating enough (400-600 calories and 60 grams Protein per day) and my body is in starvation/survival mode. They told me to increase calories to 1000-1200/day. Now that I'm on soft foods, that's a little easier to do, but still hard. I'm not weighing again until my next appointment (6/21). I'm sure I've lost a few more pounds, but not the rate the doctor would expect. They told me that the majority of weitght is lost during the first months following surgery and it gets much harder after that. I don't know what else i can do - I'm following a good eating plan - three meals a day and two snack - all on approved food list. I could increase exercise, but haven't. I feel great and have gone down one full size in clothes.

I too worry that this isn't workling for me like all the other diets I've tried, but staying positive that slowly this will work.

I think I may try to up my calories to 800 and start with cardio at least 4 times per week. maybe this will help. i will keep you posted :)

It's the dreaded 3 week stall. I had a stall at 10 days out that lasted for 2 1/2 weeks and I had another stall a few weeks after that. Since then some weeks I lose faster than others. It will come off, you just have to get adjusted. Stalls happen, it sucks, but they do. It seems like when the scale stalls for me, my clothes start getting looser and people start noticing my drop in weight. I dropped a pant size in my first stall, and have dropped two more since but both when the scale really had slowed down moving. Measure yourself and see your body changing in inches not just in the numbers on the scale.

We all lose at different rate. I lost 1lbs my second week after surgery. I thought that was real crazy!!! Just hang in there it will get better.:)

A support group leader (9 years post op from gastric bypass) told me that periods of loss are followed by stalls because it's as if your body has to catch up. She said she was on a one month stall and nearly tore her hair out, but the next month she lost 20 pounds. Accepting the process and knowing it is not a linear journey is important. I like to keep telling myself "it will take as long as it takes." Right now I'm working on acceptance and optimism as opposed to obsessing and reacting negatively to the scale which can lead to loss of motivation and not following my plan...all which could cause stalls or even weight gain! Your mood will effect your weight! I've realized that I need to work on the psychological/emotional aspects of this new lifestyle- it's a HUGE adjustment. That same group leader suggested journaling which I started doing and it does help.

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

      Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
