Couldn't believe how much this surgery cost when I saw the amount billed to my insurance plan! (Luckily my insurance should cover all of that) Wondered what others have paid...

South Louisiana here, self pay-14,200. That included everything.

I was self pay in MX and it was 14,000 CDN. I'm happy with my surgeon and I know the surgery is worth every penny!!!

TJ. Dr. Pompa at LIMARP Hospital, but I went through a Canadian company that owns part of the hospital and does follow up care/ lifetime

support in Canada. Dr Pompa was totally awesome and the hospital was amazing. That included flights (for myself and a guest) and a hotel room for 6 days. I know

its expensive for MX, but I'm a'ight with it. I'm

With all the complications I had, followed by in home nursing and TPN, I'm so very thankful I wasn't self pay, as it would have bankrupted our family. At last check I believe we have run near to 80k and still rising.

I just said to my husband the other night, thank goodness we have insurance. What would have happened if I had tried to do this as a self pay person? I think anyone who explores self pay should be absolutely sure that they have some kind of insurance that will cover any complications of the surgery even if the surgery itself isn't covered.

Yes, you pay your deductible plus your percentage. I paid my deductible and my 10%. The insurance covered the 90%

I'm so sorry to hear that! We're all of the complications related to the surgery? What kind of complications were they (if you don't mind my asking)? I hope you are back to feeling great very very soon!!!

I know all about that. I've spent nearly $100,000 on complications from the lapband because my insurance doesn't cover complications from wls even if it's life threatening. People need to be prepared.

If I had gone through my BCBS (not a covered service under my plan) they would have billed BCBS about $25,000. If the cost is $14,500, then why not bill BCBS $14,500?? Oh, that's right..... the insurance companies and execs have to make billions of dollars in profit every year. I broke my arm as a child in 1967 and it cost my father $100. Not trying to get into a political discussion, but our healthcare costs are out of control here. And I don't see anything that's in the works to fix it.

Rewind....I agree, the whole system is messed up. But, if your insurance is paying 10 grand more than the self pay amount, it is the hospital that is making extra money, not insurance. It means insurance is being screwed out of an extra 10 grand.

Nope it's the insurance companies that get a deal. They have contracted rates. All kinds on hand-shaking going on.

Believe me, the insurance companies aren't getting screwed out of anything. They are doing plenty well.

I was just sleeved two weeks ago as a self pay patient in Nebraska. The total will be about 14' date='500. That includes the hospital, surgeon, anesthesiologist, radiology, and lab. The largest cost to the hospital is 10,000 and they have a program that lets me pay just 150/month. There is no way I could have done it otherwise.[/quote']
