A very low calorie diet like the shake pre op diet causes ketosis, which is different to other types of ketosis diets. At this level, ketosis facilitates safe weight loss and keeps important body processes working properly while getting so few calories. Whilst your body and brain usually use carbohydrates as their main energy source, during ketosis, the body burns fat and ketones are produced, which supply the brain with energy. Excess ketones that your body does not use are excreted via urine and breath (thus the bad breath). Ketosis symptoms may include dehydration, fatigue, headaches and Constipation, due to excessive amounts of sodium, potassium and Water being lost from your body. However, your body can adjust to these changes in your electrolytes levels, and these symptoms will usually pass within the first few days (3-6 days) . This is followed by an increase in energy and reduction in appetite which, through this Intensive Phase, is likely to result in consistent and successful weight loss. It's also important to know that these are typical symptoms of a ketosis diet and you should try to stick to the program and pass through the first 3 days of the program, which is when you are most likely to experience Ketosis Side Effects. Of course, if you are concerned about your symptoms or if they persist, speak to your doctor, dietitian or pharmacist before adjusting or stopping the Optifast® VLCD™ Program.

Yup I get thrush from antibiotics. To solve the problem I will either rinse my mouth out with vinegar and this makes it easier to peel up the white stuff or you can take a slower approach and eat some yogurt. Yogurt has Probiotics and it works really well on vaginal yeast infections also. I'm a natural health nut lol and these are things that I used. The yogurt will take about 2-3 days to work and make sure you leave it on your tongue for a couple of seconds before swallowing. You can also buy probiotic pills. Any type of regular yogurt will work but don't use the greek yogurt.

ETA: if you have a vaginal yeast infection also you can try inserting a tampon that is covered in plain yogurt and smearing yogurt on the outside itchy parts. This works! I've tried it and it works way better than what the doc gives you and plus IMO it's more convenient than running to the doc. My friend thought I was crazy for doing it until she developed a yeast infection and she raved about how well it worked. I also drink red raspberry leaf tea during my period and it gets rid of menstrual cramps. Works way better than advil and all you need to do is drink one cup and there will be no cramps for the rest of your period.

Exactly how I felt! I've learned a lot since then. The white tongue comes from a few different things but mostly a detox your body is going thru because of the lack of food, sugar and carbs. If you do a Water fast you get the same thing!

Nausia is because you are hungry, your stomach might not feel it but the rest of your body is freaking out because of the missing calories and sugar. They forget to tell you about that in those classes they make you take.

I honestly don't think the surgeons have a clue as to what happens to the body when put thru this process and the support team at my surgeons office didn't either or at least they weren't willing to share.

Has anyone been in this situation after surgery??

I had thrust after surgery and was told it was common from the amount of antibiotics given in the hospital. I did have complications and was rushed in for a second surgery = more antibiotics, but I was told it was common.

I had the white tongue and the horrible taste. The mouth rinse made me sick, so they gave me pills which took 2 weeks to wipe out the thrust, but now it is all good!

Good luck :)

Ok, I haven't had surgery, BUT I have had thrush. I couldn't eat or hardly drink anything for about a week. They had to give me liquid medicine to clear it up. I hope you get it taken care of whatever it may be. I think mine was from a combination of birth control and antibiotics.

I am 1 1/2 weeks out and I had the same. Very white tongue and my first thought was thrush. By my one week post op appointment it was gone.

Are you drinking a lot of milk?

My first couple weeks on full fluids, I drank a ton my milk to get my Protein in and the back of my tongue turned white from it.

I had this too! I would brush and brush my tongue but it wouldn't budge. It felt like fur growing on my tongue! I was convinced for a bit it was thrush, but it did go away on its own. This only happened during the clear liquid/full liquid phase. I was convinced it was the Isopure that caused it. If you have doubts, check with your doctor to be sure.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
