Lower BMI Bandsters!

Recommended Posts

Hi Nancy. Yes, I know how you feel about having a lower bmi. I just got banded 6 days ago and the others in Monterrey that were also getting banded couldn't believe I was accepted to be banded but as soon as we all went to pre-op and they heard my bp was 170/110 and they were all normal, they got past it and understood. They had to give me bp meds to take before surgery to get it down. Good luck on your journey.

I am one of the fortunate ones. MY blood pressure is great. I have high cholestral and my triglycerides (can't spell either one as you can see) and on the high side but no other problems. If I keep gaining like I have the last year that will change. I have gained almost 10 lbs since the first of June. I thought my scales had broken so bought a new fancy one and guess what I have gained 9.6 lbs. :) If I keep on this way I will qualify for insurance and won't have to self pay.

Do you see how I hit the "quote" button? that shows i'm answering you...also once you post something I believe it automatically enters you into that thread, then when you login at the top in the blue bar click on Quick Links and find subscribed threads and go to where you left off last and see all that has happened since you last visited....hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your help. I am learning. I will check in every day now that I know how and will let everyone know how I am going after the surgery August 1.

I went to dinner tonight with my family and had a Taco salad. UGH. Not my favorite thing but I am trying to learn how to eat better. I am sure going to miss chips and Hot sauce. I could go through t baskets all by myself. :hungry:

I have good new for you!!! Chips and salsa are one of those foods that go right through the band with no problem. I love my my chips and salsa!!!!! But now being banded I can't eat as many baskets as I used to, but I can eat enough to satisfy!!!

Well! Nice to see this thread moving again!

It's very frustrating to eat right and not see the scale move. I get afraid that I am done losing and have lost all that I will. But I have to keep telling myself that I am wearing clothes that I haven't worn in 5 years, and I would have only gained more weight at the rate I was going. I love my band!

I feel the same way. But now with my 3rd fill, I feel like I will start losing after a 3 month plateau and even gain of 4 pounds.

How much have you lost now?

My BMI 35 and I am going to band with Dr Joya, Gerald told me not to do the liquid diet, my BMI was low enough to not to do it before surgery. Does this sound right? I am worried and thinking about doing it anyways. Please fill me in>

yes he did say that I should do clear liquids 24 hours before, I was concerned with not doing the liquid diet 10 days prior. The US doc I originally spoke with, required the 10 day liquid, so when Joya said it was okay not to do it I was a little surprised.

By way, how are you feeling? How long did you stay in Mexico? Do your recommend taking an extra day there before flying or do you just want to get home? I have three kids under 7 and I think I might need some quiet time before I return, what do you think?

I am not sure when you posted this I still have not figured out how these things work but just wanted to let you that there are plenty of Dr.s that will band you at a low BMI. If you are self pay you should have no problem finding one. I talked to 4 Dr.s here in Houston and everyone of them were willing and happy to band me. I am self pay and by BMI is 30.9. My surgery is scheduled for August 1. Dr. Hadar Spivak is my Dr. Dr. Felix Spiegel is another very good Dr. in the Houston area. Good luck to you.

I am also a low BMI gal. I have the same BMI you do and have been looking for a surgeon in the US that will work with me. I am in New Mexico and have been focusing my search to Arizona or Texas. I spoke with a surgeon in OH that would do a low BMI, but that is a tad far for follow up care, I think.

How do you like Dr. Spivak? Did you specifically ask for him? Do you mind me asking about how much you will be paying for surgery? I, obviously, am self pay too. What sort of after care will you recieve from Dr. Spivak/staff? Is it included with the amount you will be paying or will you have extra expenses? How long has the process taken for you? You mentioned you are having surgery on Aug. 1.

I'm trying to do as much research as I can. My husband totally supports my decision. I'm just trying to find the right place/surgeon to go to.

Thanks for any help you can give me and good luck to you!!!

I don't know who you were asking, but I would be happy to answer you!

I stayed for 3 days at the Lucerna, which is a beautiful hotel. Some people stayed 2, but I wanted the extra day to rest too since I have two younger children and would have to come home and act normal.

The extra day was definitely nice!

I was in Mexico for 5 days. Flew in on Monday, did pre-op, surgery Tuesday, released Wednesday, dr checked on me at the hotel on Thursday and gave me my lapband ID and flew out on Friday Morning. I'm doing well. This is day 8 for me and day 9 on liquids. I'm just ready to chew some food! :-)

Wow, that was a nice time frame!!!

Just follow the rules your doctor gave you to follow. It is for your good in the long run. I remember, I was dying for some chewing. I didn't even get a mushy phase. Straight from liquid stage to solid.

I was pureeing chili with cheese and pureeing a homemade tortilla Soup, that was soooo good.

Let me know if you have any questions!!!

I am doing good. I am doing Protein Drinks since I am SOOOOO tight! I am not really hungry and feeling good. I think the liquid vitamins are helping a lot.

I had gained 4 pounds when I got my fill 2 weeks ago, putting me at 169. I weighed in today, couldn't help it even if I am premenstrual, and I weighed 164!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel like I went down in size. My pants look a little funny, too loose.

Just wanted to see how you are all doing????

Maybe we can check in with

1. How we are eating

2. Exercise

3. Vitamins/supplements

4. Water/fluid intake

5. Our emotions, etc

Take care and talk to you all soon!!!

Hey! I am new to this thread although I am not new to Lapband Talk. I was banded in October 2006. Most of the weight Ive lost was in the liquad/mushie stage. I have been extremely good the past three days and have managed to pull off 6 lbs. I couldnt have done it without appetite suppressants. I am not proud of that but I think I needed a jumpstart. I dont plan on taking them very long.

My lapband journey has defenetely been a roller coaster. I lost, and then gained, gained, gained. All of which was my fault. I ate everything but the furniture. Especially SUGAR!!!!! I went through a lot in the past two years so Im sure depression and anxiety has played a huge role in my failures, but I am thankful for the last three days. I feel like I am finally getting some clarity back.

I have been having 2 eggs for Breakfast, baked chicken 3/4 cup for lunch, and some sort of meat 3/4 cup for supper with a 1/2 green Beans. Also have gotten my 8 glasses of Water or crystal light in each day. So far this is working for me. I go Monday to my doc, and if I havent lost 4 lbs from the last visit which was a month ago, hes going to do a fill. I guess I really need that. But when I was in there a month ago I didnt want a fill, I think I was afraid I couldnt eat or something. Crazy...but my life!!! ha ha ha

I am around 31 BMI, its good to see everyone going thru what I am. I want to be around 140. I guess because I remember that number from YEARS ago, and I remember feeling good about myself then. If I go lower thats great but Im not gonna push myself. The doc says I can go down to 110 for my height but I dont think I want to be that skinny. We'll see!!!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
