Are vitamins really necessary post op? Help

Recommended Posts

Hi All:

I live in Miami but got my sleeve in Ecuador on Feb 5th, 2013. My doctor only has me taking the B12 sublinguals and no other Vitamins or supplements. I have asked him and he says they are not necessary.

I feel well but wanted to make sure if I am doing the right thing by not taking vitamins.

Thanks for your help.

Are you drinking Protein shakes that have added Vitamins? If not, I don't see how on Earth you are getting in all the Vitamins and minerals you need from the little bit you can eat.

Someone else chime in... I'm not sleeved yet, so I'm no authority....

I do take Protein shakes, not sure about the Vitamins added though. And I am really hungry sometimes, not sure if related to that or not.

Thanks,

That's easy enough...read the back of the label. Some Protein Shakes will have Vitamins added and there will be a LONG list with the daily recommended percentages (below the normal stuff like calories, carbs, etc).

I think just about every person on here is on some kind of a Vitamin regimen. I don't think it's humanly possible to get all of the vitamins/minerals you need with the small amount that we are able to eat post-op. I am on multi-vitamins, Calcium with Vitamin D, and B-12. Do you follow up with anyone here in the US? I would check in with a dietitican/nutritionist about your dietary requirements based on what you are eating.

I do not take Vitamins. I take B-12 about 3xs a week. I had my metabolic panel done and I look great and high in B-12.

Its not necessary if you are eating well. IMHO.

Hi, no I don't follow up with anyone here in the US but I know I need to. I've been trying to find a nutritionist who specializes in post wls cases but haven't had any luck. Maybe all of them have the knowledege not sure.

I would at the least add in a good multi Vitamin and take that in the mornings. With the small amounts we eat it can be hard to make sure we're getting in all the proper nutrients we need. I'm using the Centrum gummies since Multi Vitamins can get a bit large and hard to swallow so I stick to the chewables.< /p>

Vitamins and minerals are very important as a deficiency found at month 6 or month 12 or later are very hard to correct and silently can sneak up on you. It is better to be safe then sorry to take a daily Vitamin and mineral supplement, considering the limited amount of food we eat.

You should try and get 200% DV during the first few months and can back off to 100% after month 6. I would say to ask your doctor, but it sounds like they do not believe in Vitamin and mineral supplementation.

There are many different brands you cab choose from as a WLS post op. A few that come to mind are Bariatric Advantage, Celebrate, trader Joe and costco brands. BA and Celebrate did not sit well with me and caused me to throw up. I settled on Trader Joe Adult High Potency Tablets. I still take these at month 9, but might switch onto pill form following 12 months.

I found the GNC extreme athletic vitapaks to be really good once I started getting serious about daily exercise and increasing the intensity. However, they are expensive and not rated very high in a list another member shared recently so backed off of them. I am looking for a good daily men's vitapak that is top rated for athletes.

My MD has all of his patients on 1000-2000 mg of Calcium, 1000-2000 mg of Vitamin D, and two flintstones chewable vitamins daily, for women the flintstones with Iron. He also has us split them and take anything with iron separate from the calcium and vit D.

Thanks all for replying. I'm thinking of just taking some Flintstones Multi Vitamins, or are these not ideal?

I have heard the Flintstones may not be complete enough for Sleeve WLS post ops.

Ok, I was thinking about Flintstones. These are the kids Vitamins right? Or is there a Flintstones adult version?

They are the kid ones but he has us taking two of them at a time to make sure and get everything in.

I take a Gummy Vitamin daily, and at 14 months out I eat all 9 servings of my fruits and veggies, almost every day and have cut back on the animal protien a bit, WOW! Big difference. But don't try it right away, you need all that protien for a really long time.

Jucing will help with Vitamins, too.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
