Just about 8 weeks out and I'm still eating too fast

Recommended Posts

usually it happens around dinner time.

i work all day. i eat light Snacks throughout the day so i don't get "starving" but i don't know what it is. Maybe force of habit? When i get home and sit down to a table full of food. It's like I'm back at my old ways. i sit down I'm hungry and i see food. i start eating. i take big bites like i used to and i don't chew it thoroughly. make sense? i need to start reminding myself before i sit down and eat that i need to take small bites and chew chew chew.

anyone else going thru this? any tips?

I am a little over 3 months out and still doing this. Old habits are hard to break. Occasionally I get nauseated and dry heave due to my eating speed. You would think that would stop me. I think it's all about the "mindful eating" thing. I am a work in progress, I guess!

I can not speak from experience since I am still waiting on my approval, but the Nut suggested using a baby fork or spoon. She also suggested laying down your fork inbetween each bite. I have also seen electronic forks that tell you when you are eating too fast.

I am 5 months out and do this, but I have never gotten sick or have had any bad consequences and I don't know if my eating fast is the same as other people's eating fast. I have always been one to chew well and savor the flavor...lol...I don't, however, count between bites or put my fork down for any amount of time. I just eat until I start to feel satisfied and then I stop and satisfied turns into a little full. Not uncomfortable, but definitely a full feeling.

I was very afraid of eating too quickly and taking bites too big. Before surgery I purchased a kitchen scale, small spoons & forks and put my food on smaller plates. It definitely helped me early on, and I still use them, just not as often - though I do still measure my food if I can't judge it correctly - anything more than 4oz and I'm overfull. I started cooking and wrapping meals in small containers, just to make it more convenient.

I needed to train myself to eat a new way and It worked for me.

Good luck!

I still do this from time to time as well and I've struggled with it since my surgery 16 months ago. Depending on how ravenous I am, when I do eat, sometimes I dive right in and my old eating habits come back to me. I have to think about eat slow and with small bites, or I go right back to eating fast. Some foods go down without a problem, others will quickly let me know that I'm eating too fast, will get my attention and then I slow down, but I never get sick, just can feel uncomfortable. I don't have any answers as I continue to struggle to remember to slow down to this day, but I can relate.

This is something you really, really want to get ahold of. Understand this habit and get away from it. I can't evaluate what is causing it, but my guess is you are very aware of it even before you do it. You are aware that it won't "kill you". You can do it, and still feel like you used to be, you get a quick comfort "reward" for simulating a bad habit.

I am soooo not preaching. I am pointing out you have become aware of a potential issue, and now you can address it.

Can I suggest you do not sit down? Or eat away from any distractions? at least at first? Chopsticks? small spoon? or literally just get one or two bites, and section them off on your plate in piles.

As I talk to people who are in their +1year mark, this is (often) the first bad habit revisited. So it also becomes our first opportunity to learn.

On the flip side, don't be overly harsh on yourself, that in itself can be detremental (remember how many times we self sabotaged with negative feelings before the surgery? The doc only removed your tummy, the rest of the issues are still here).

Good luck.

Hey guys...I am one week post op and wanted to share an app that helps you eat slower which = less pain :-D

It's called "Eat Slower". You set it on whatever interval you want. I have mine set on 2 minutes and it notifies me every time i can take a bite. This helps me realize I'm full faster and to avoid the "I took one too many bites" syndrome!

I'm pre-op but I've been using the Eat Slower app, too. I currently have it set to a 1 minute interval but my plan is to slowly increase it. I'm finding it really, really helpful in slowing me down!

And by doing this have you girls gained weight? Just wondering. Put a reminder or something on the table and make sure you take a half hour to 45 min to eat ladies . Keep me posted on your success .

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
