Blood Clot Prevention: Leg Sleeves and Stockings

Ask your doctor if he has ordered special sleeves or stockings for you to wear on your legs to help stop blood clots from forming in your legs while you are in the hospital. The sleeves are called Sequential Compression Device (SCD) system and the stockings are Thrombo Embolic Deterrent hose (TED® hose). These sleeves and stockings help keep pressure on the legs to help stop blood from clotting.

Along with the SCDs or TED hose, your doctor may order other methods to prevent blood clots. These may include taking medications to thin your blood, doing ankle-pumping exercises, getting out of bed and walking around. Any or all of these may help to stop blood clots.

I hope this eases your mind. Best wishes for a safe surgery.

Let me put this in perspective for you. If you have surgery, there is a risk of complications, both on the table and afterwards (stricture, leaks). That risk is very low, less than 1%. If you don't have surgery and continue to remain obese and probably gain even more weight, there is a 100% chance that you will eventually have complications from obesity, even more so than you already have. Almost every obese person has issues with self-image, walking, being out of breath while trying to do the simplest tasks that require physical exertion, not to mention inability to find clothes that look/feel good on the obese body. Eventually, eating badly will clog our arteries, lead to any combination of: asthma, arthritis, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, pneumonia, heart failure, blood clots (from inactivity), varicose veins, etc. So, when it comes down to it, it's LESS risky to have WLS than it is to remain obese. Dr. Oz said something that has stuck with me: "If you're 100 pounds overweight...it's like having cancer. You'd operate to remove a cancer, so why wouldn't you have WLS". At 18 +months out, I've had resolution of all my comorbidities, lost over 120 pounds, and I'm living a wonderful life that I couldn't have predicted pre-op. WLS changed and saved my life and I think it will do the same for you. Good luck on your journey! :)

I was sleeved on 3/6. I had compression boots in hospital and am still on louvenox injections once daily for 2 weeks total. I did lots of ankle pumps and walked halls the night of my surgery. Making sure to get plenty of activity.

I also had much trepidation the few days prior to my surgery. I thought of everything that could go wrong and quite honestly, almost pulled my I.V. And left hospital the. Morning of.

As was mentioned, there's always risk with surgery but it is minimal.

I am so very sorry for the poor man who lost his life. It's a real heartbreak to hear this. Will someone tell me when was his surgery and when did he pass?

I was so emotional reading about the poor man that passed away. As I'm sure everyone else was. I was defiantly having second thoughts. I know I get the stockings and on meds 3 weeks out to prevent blood clots but there are still risks. It's scary and a hard decision. I wish us all the best.

Can you purchase these stockings on your own? I am thinking they would be useful for me on my flight home as it is a 5 hour flight and lots of time in car to/from airport in addition to the flight.

Walking is the best thing you can do to prevent blood clots. Do not cross your legs when sitting. If you have a long flight, get up every hour and walk. The same with a long car ride. You can buy the TED stockings at any medical supply store, but walking is still the best prevention! I also know someone who died of a clot that went to her lungs (pulmonary embolism). She had lots of post op pain and spent most of her time on the couch or in bed. Very sad but we need to be aware to do everything for prevention!

NO WORRIES. ITS APART OF LIFE AND WE ALL HAVE TO MAKE THIS IMPORTANT DECISION IN OUR LIVES. STAY UNHEALTHY AND RISK OF DYING AT ONE POINT OR RISKING GOING THROUGH SURGERY TO HELP BETTER OUR LIVES...

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
