Pre-op liquid diet?

Recommended Posts

I am 1week Pre-op from the gastric sleeve. I have been reading some people have to go on a 7-day liquid diet Pre-op but my doctor only prescribed 1000 calories a day, 14 days prior to surgery. I'm concerned my body will go into "shock" after surgery. Anyone else not have to go on a Pre-op liquid diet?

No I only had to do 24 hour clear liquid diet per-op. I have found some many varying diets out there!! I guess the best is to follow your dr advise , it is very confusing though!!

Every Dr. Does things differently.... Also it is best to keep in mind that your Dr. Knows "you" and what "your needs are" so it is best to follow the Dr's instruction. Your desires and needs are very different post op. No need to worry ! Best Wishes

I think I want to go to your doctor afterall! My doc wants me on a liquid diet for one week prior to surgery! I really have no idea at all how I will do that...especially since when I don't eat on time, I get really shakey & feel like I'm going to pass out.

I have type 2 diabetes, but with watching my carb intake & taking the oral medication, I'm actually testing normal (5.9) but if I go without eating too long, I nearly pass out, after getting all shakey & irritable & nothing I say makes sense. :(

You're lucky, even tho it's only 1000 calories, it's still FOOD! Good luck on your surgery. I'm sure you'll do fine. Maybe the diet each doctor orders for this patients, depends on how obese they are? I wonder if that's a possibility?

Lucky y'all! I am on day 2 of 14 day liquid diet. Hardest thing I have ever done. Also day 2 of not smoking. I would love a bite of anything that's not liquid.

My doctor stressed the importance of not consuming sugar and going very low carbohydrate. I was asked to do two weeks of Protein Shakes and one lean and green meal. I was asked not to consume grains, fruits, starchy vegetables,or anything containing sugar for the two weeks leading up to surgery. I got the impression that being "liquid" was not the important part but rather they wanted me high Protein and low carb

I am on day 4 on a 14 day pre-op liquid diet. I wish I was able to have a salad or a small piece of chicken a day, but I guess I should've done better while seeing the nutritionist. My surgery date is 4/1 and this is my first time posting. I wish all of you the best!

Day 1 of preop liquids and I've come to realize the horrible addiction I have to eating. I'm not sure if its nerves or the fact that I know I can't eat but all I want to do is chew something. This is ridiculous. I'm not even hungry. Call it oral fixation or eating addiction but Houston we have a problem. I'm so ashamed I never realized this sooner. Hopefully this week off foods will help prepare me for what's to come. I refuse to give in and cheat on my diet. I am not not have ever been a quitter. I will conquer this. I have to in order to have a safe surgery and optimal results. Btw...Swansons low sodium chicken broth is so bland. Lmbo.

Lburtie, I totally agree! We do have a problem! I'm not hungry either but it's the thought of having something good to eat that is getting me! I'm sticking with it! Haven't cheated and don't plan to! Good luck! :)

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.
