Has anyone had their sleeve stretched?

Recommended Posts

Over the last three weeks I have been able to eat less and less. I have reached the point where I can drink but if I eat I am sliming and vomitting for at least 2 hours. My surgeon wants to try and stretch my sleeve. I have been very happy with my weight loss but am now starting to have some problems ie. Low blood pressure,, dizziness. Has anyone else experienced this? Has anyone had to have their sleeve stretched?

My surgeon's nurse mentioned it when I said I could not physically eat the 1100 to 1200 calories they suggested. I told them NO WAY. But I am not having the problems you mentioned.

I'd really be interested in hearing how this would be accomplished. Everything I've read or heard indicates a properly formed sleeve is near impossible to stretch.

OTR, what my surgeon is telling me is that he thinks I may have excessive scar tissue which is taking up food space. I really don't know what to think at this point, but I am feeling very weak and just want to eat.

If I know bariatric patients, where there is a will, there is a way!

My doctor told me about sleeve stenosis which shows up about four weeks after surgery. It is when there is a tightening of the tube. It sounds like what you have. They did tell me to fix it, it was an outpatient procedure to fix it.

OTR

A nurse in my surgeons practice explain it to me as a out patient procedure where they go down your throat like an EGD! I told her to stop telling me becauce after my doctors blunder I am not going back under! He cut my small bowel and almost killed me. No second chances for him.

Reading here I find the amounts I can eat fairly common to everyone else.

I agree with OTR! a properly shaped sleeve would be extremely hard to stretch and it will never be able to hold the same amounts of food that it did before surgery. Usually when someone over stuffs their sleeve they vomit or feel a ton of discomfort. If a person really wanted to sabotage themselves and their weight loss they could do this with slider foods ( milk shakes, mashed potatoes, etc,) but this stuff leaves the sleeve fairly quickly and wouldn't be in there long enough to stretch it, same with liquids. The only thing that does stay in the sleeve for a while is Protein but if you over eat that you will more than likely vomit. The thing that does change is gastric emptying. Your stomach becomes more efficient at mushing the food up and sending it through the pyloric valve. There's a really good article about it but I'm too lazy to find it right now.

OP hopefully your surgeon will be able to find out what's going on. I dealt with the dizzy spells but then I started eating more frequently and I've been eating 5-6 meals a day. Hopefully you will start to feel better soon.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
