Thanks for replying, and Happy Thanksgiving. Can you tell me about your lap band experience ? How are you doing with it? Did you like your surgeon, ect? I am dealing with my insurance now about the surgery. I have been to the seminar, but that's it.

I agree with hippmom, the staff at Precision Surgery is superior. They ALL go above and beyond to take care of their patients. Its almost as if we all belong to a unique little club. Our support groups are informative yet fun. I hope you'll be joining us on the journey to "healthy-ville".

I was banded on 10/28/05. I've managed to carve away 76 lbs. (Just received my 75 lb silver pin of honor!) I am a slower loser than most, however, I have proven that even the most stubborn can win this battle.

I have trouble remembering the golden rule of lapband...the band is a "TOOL not a BARRIER".

You cannot go wrong with the surgeons and staff at Precision Surgery. They provide great support and have genuine concern for their patients. :clap2: Did I mention that they are great yet? LOL

Keep in touch and let us know your progress with the insurance and surgery!

Thank you Hippmom for the reply. Have you had any problems or just having trouble getting the proper restriction? My insurance doesn't want to pay but about 20% of the cost. I am working on that. I can't afford it without help from the insurance. I didn't realize it would be less expensive at the surgery center than out-patient at the hospital. I don't think people have to usually stay over night.

I have been out of town for the holidays so just read your post. I had surgery at Precision Surgery in June 2006 and it was the most wonderful thing I ever did. I started out at almost 300 lbs and in so much pain I could hardly get through the grocery store. Over the holidays I went on a horseback trip and rode over 10 miles friday and saturday. I got up and rode 5 miles before coming home sunday (yesterday). All with no pain medicine. Life is good again.

My insurance paid for some of surgery and I financed the rest. I waited a long time to have it because of the money. I finally figured that a funeral would cost close to what the surgery would cost, and that was were I was headed. I now feel good enough to work and make the payments myself.

Good luck with everything. Let me know if I can help in any way.

Hey...I am considering the lapband and live 45 miles from Texarkana. I will be self-pay and was wondering how much difference there was between the hospital and the surgery center. Also, are fills included in that price?

Thanks!!

Kim

I haven't been banded yet but I am waiting on insurance approval. Check out the post from "hippmom" a little further up in this thread. She said she saved a few thousand by going to the surgery center. You might ask her more about that. I have never heard one negative thing about Dr. K or Dr. H. in Texarkana. If I get to do the surgery I am going to ask for Dr. K, the lady doctor. I just think I will be more conforatable, and tha'ts who I prefer. I think everyone like them both. If you have any questions just ask, the bandsters on this site are great to help in any way.

Hey Kim.. I don't know bout the difference between the hospital and the surgery center. (my insurance covers). But in the packet that I got at the seminar that Dr. H presented, it states that if you are a cash pay, the follow up visits are free for one year, BUT they reserve the right to start charging you if you don't attend support meetings. It's an incentive thang. But, I think if you are serious bout the surgery, then the support meetings are just something you will want to do.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
