i wanna a soda do freaking bad i can scream

Recommended Posts

I had a diet coke the other night, drank it really slow over about an hour. I was fine. Why is everyone saying they have to stay away? I understand regular soda but diet once in a while should be ok.

People think it will stretch your sleeve. I really don't believe this since to me larger quantities of food are more likely to stretch your stomach than some lighter than air bubbles in a few ounces of pop.

I mostly quit pop in may after the seminar, which said no more pop, no real explanation as to why . However, I was a freaking addict about the stuff and it was all I drank, a lot of people around this forum are. I've had 3 pops in the last 6 weeks or so. It's well Water in my area and during christmas parties some houses have undrinkable Water for me (I can't do the taste). It took me well over an hour to finish them and it didn't satisfy the way it used to. The pleasant sizzle that I crave is now a burn that I can't stand and I can feel the gas bubbles in my normal, pre surgery stomach. It's more drinkable than well water though.

On a side note, I couldn't help but feel my brain reacting really positively while I drank it. My brain was saying knock it back but my tongue was screaming about the burn and then my stomach was a little upset. I think it left my system a little shocked. I had been drinking 6-8 cans a day since I was around 10 so the pathway in my brain is well established but after roughly 6 months of no pop it's just so different for me.

I used to drink coke....and I miss it. I really enjoyed my ice cold cokes. I'm not gonna lie.....I've had a few sips since my 11/7 surgery. It hasn't gone over well. But honestly.....my sister's diabetic dr has told her that regular sodas are better than diet soda will ever be, because of the aspartame & other things in diet soda that aren't in regular soda. And let's face it.....diet soda just isn't as good anyway. :)

I am two months out. Have lost 34 pounds. I have a sip or two everyday of soda. Hasn't seemed to effect the weight.

How much exactly is a sip or too

The real reason is because its loaded with sugar and calories and chemicals and a lot of Sleeves react adversely to it....violent cramps and vomiting.

I am 4 1/2 months post op. some days i miss soda so bad! Like yesterday when we went to the bar to watch a game. I drink my Water faithfully but OMG what I wouldn't give to order a large diet coke! Don't even miss beer.....

but I used to be a diet coke addict. So i am facing my cravings for soda the same way i faced cigarettes when i quit 3 years ago. I am stronger than them!

Yes, you are stronger. You can do it!!

I was a major coca cola addict - I had it for Breakfast, throughout the day, at night. It was a source of comfort for me, more so than any other food. I actually cried about giving up soda - which sounds pretty ridiculous, but whenever I was stressed or sad coca cola had always made me feel better.

Since surgery I have had nightmares about once a month that I have forgotten that I can't drink soda and have had one anyway. The problem is that I know it would just take one sip and my addiction would return instantly. I can't imagine drinking flat diet soda, as I don't think artificial sweeteners are healthy and it would be a "gateway drug" to my addiction!

But yes, I miss my soda too. And pre-surgery I might have chosen soda over sex. Now, at about 110 lbs down, the sex is so much better it would be a much easier choice!

I will occasionally allow myself a glass of diet dr pepper in the morning. I'm not a coffee person and I sometimes need the bubbles to help clear out my throat if my sinuses are acting up.

I was a hard core diet soda addict pre-sleeve. I chose to go cold turkey when I started my pre-op diet. So, I'm very cautious now. I could see myself easily sliding back into that addiction.

Oh, I definitely don't keep it in the house. If I do have one, I buy a single can or bottle at the convenience store.

And I proudly walk past the hostess fruit pies, without purchasing them, that used to always accompany my morning soda! Now those are "gateway drugs" for me. I do think I could eat a whole hostess cherry pie!

It's mostly the carbonation not the caffeine. Caffeine in small portions won't hurt.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
