Dehydration it no joke !!!! To all my pre- op sleeve it is so important to get fluids in. It's really hard in the beginning but try hard . Getting me a couple of IV bags and I get to go home :)

I'm glad you're getting the hydration you need. Water. Water. Water.

And thank you for the reminder. It is good that we are reminded that this is a big deal!

I hope you feel better...

how long do you have to watch your Fluid intake. why does it seem to be more of an issue after surgery?there must be a time when its not as important anymore?

Saddie I am13 months post op down 110 lbs and had a trip to the ER last month after passing out and not breathing. Diagnosis? Dehydration and low potassium. So I can say, it will NEVER be out of my mind to getmmy Water in daily. One time, I did not eat or drink much during a busy day, that night I got up, passed out, did a face plant and ended up in the hospital via ambulance and ER room.

I can say...drink, drink, drink and to all recently sleeved, sipping is real please DO IT!

I am thinking that after we are sleeved we can't go fill a glass up with Water or whatever the liquid and gulp it down. Not even a half glass. We can only do a little at a time. We forget that when we used to drink how much we actually took in, in one sitting. Before surgery if i went out to dinner I could easily drink a glass or two of water and eat my meal. Now I don't hardly get any water in unless it's some before or well after eating.

I had a rough time the first 5-6 weeks post op. went to urgent care twice for fluids. No matter how much I sip sip sipped it was never enough. It may sound easy.....like just go drink some more....but it wasnt. I've never been dehydrated in my life. I used to drink a gallon of Water a day before surgery. You have to be very mindful post op. Since you cannot drink so long before and after meals, and you cant drink with meals, you have to be very diligent about sipping constantly when you can.

Know your body. Know the signs or dehydration.

I am really proud of the OP for going in and getting the fluids they needed.

This is something that I think will be difficult for me. I routinely drink 100 - 120 oz of fluids now, but I also slam down large amounts of Water at a time, especially when I realize I'm a bit behind on the day. I don't just continuously sip, sip, sip all day long, which I know I will have to do afterwards. doh.gif

Is that how it is for the rest of your life? You just sip, sip, sip all day? Will we ever be able to drink in somewhat large amounts? Or is this just right after surgery?

I'm 7 weeks out and can easily down a glass of Water in one. It just takes time at first for the swelling to go down but you will be able to drink a larger amount each day. XXxxx

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
