Your favorite foods post op?

Recommended Posts

I'm hoping to hear from hose who are maybe a year out, who have an established "normal" diet going on of like to hear anyone's thoughts though.

I can't get surgery until February, but I'm trying to come up with a binder of foods for all 3 meals. Foods that are sleeve friendly, healthy and bonus points if they are kid friendly. (I don't mind making healhy food for he kids, I just can't stand wasting said food. I'm slowly weaning them into a healthier way of eating so they aren't blindsided)

What are your favorite breakfasts?

Lunches?

dinner?

I haven't made to goal yet - still trying to lose the last 25+ lbs. But we make sleeve friendly food for the whole family now (except when my sis insists on deep fried food LOL).

My mom cooks amazing chicken curry and fish curry which the family eats with Indian bread (naan/roti) or with white rice. I skip the carb and just eat the chicken curry. The curry has less oil, no coconut etc. Very healthy.

When I eat out, I usually eat Chinese - and I request that they use less oil and cook the meat in sauce instead. That is working out very well for me. I tried some Chinese recipes at home (like dragon chicken, chilli chicken etc) with my own variation in recipes and it tastes amazing and it is a big hit with the family :)

This is my favorite/usual food:

Breakfast - one egg omelet or one small dosa (Indian pancake made with rice and lentil flour), one cup coffee.

Mid afternoon Snacks - one small yogurt (100g) with cucumber

lunch - chicken or fish usually, mostly cooked in a curry. But grilled works fine too. Some Veggies or some kind of Beans or mushrooms. (Mushrooms = yummy!) Sometimes I add some kind of rice dish if I think my carb intake is especially low.

Evening - One cup of coffee/tea with a small saltine cracker.

dinner - I become very lazy at dinner. sometimes I just have some fruits. Or drink half a Protein shake. If nothing feels appetizing, I just munch on some cucumber and drink a cup of low fat milk.

Thats it!

I'm only 7 months out, but I can say I almost live on salads and Protein supplements. And I love it. 7months without bread, rice, Pasta, potatoes, or fried foods & I can honestly say I don't miss them at all. I do have my weaknesses, I have reacquired a taste for sweets, mostly high end chocolate. But I have also noticed that I like dark chocolate now, whereas pre op I despised it.

I have experimented with prettymuch all foods & can honestly say, I really don't desire most of what I use to eat. Never thought I'd like salads, my reaction to salads preop had always been "I'm not a rabbit, I need real food". My how things have changed.

I do have the occasional cup of yogurt, or nutrigrain bar, but those really only happen on the run.

My problem with salads' date=' is that you might As well be eating air. We only have so much space in there, so why not fill it with food that has nutrients?

Salads aren't bad for you, they're just not good for you either.[/quote']

Actually if you invest a bit of time researching the ingredients, salads can be quite healthy.

I do agree, if you are eating prodomanantly iceberg lettuce, then you are not getting much nutritionally. However, if you choose dark green veggies and micronutrient rich add-ons.

For example, one of my favorites right now is

Mixed baby greens, herbs, & spinach

Chopped apples

Pecans

Dried cranberries

Chopped chicken breast

Blueberries

This is very nutrient rich, and tases great too.

This sounds delicious. Do you use a dressing? How much of the salad do you eat? Do you think 6 weeks is to early for this type of meal?

Yes, I do use a dressing, On this particular salad I use a sugar free raspberry vinegarette by Maple Grove Farms. It's only 5calories per 2tblsp serving.

I'm also a Ranch junkie, so what I've done there is mix:

8oz plain no fat Greek yogurt

Skim milk (to adjust consistency)

1packet powdered Ranch mix

1/2-1 scoop powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury unflavored Protein powder

I will admit, it is a tad more bitter than the creamy buttermilk ranch I used before surgery, but it really was easy to adjust to.

As far as serving size, I'm a truck driver, so I do a lot for convenience. I buy 16oz deli containers and loosely fill them with my salads. I've never weighed them, but if I had to guess its probably 6-8 oz by weight before adding dressing.

As long as you are cleared for full foods, I don't see why you couldn't have this. One caveat being, go very heavy on the chicken. At your stage, your portion will likely be about 1/2 of what I can eat(I'm 7months out) and you need the Protein more than anything else.

I regret that lettuce is one of the five things I just can't tolerate.

My favorites:

  • anything cheese
  • steamed shrimp
  • pepperoni slices
  • unsalted nuts, dry roast
  • mini meatloaves
  • Gold Peak diet tea
  • cucumbers
  • Peanut Butter

I haven't tried lettuce yet, as I'm not quite three months out yet, but this sounds amazing!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
