THINspirations Weight Loss Surgery Support Group

THINspirations is one of DFW's only patient-led support groups. We meet the 3rd Saturday of each month in the Plano/Frisco area. We used to meet at Season's 52 restaurant, but that is changing effective January 2014.

In the 11 months that THINspirations has been around its members have lost well over 2,000 pounds and counting as a result of WLS and hard work! The comraderie and friendships that have come from this group are nothing short of amazing as many of our members can attest. In addition to our monthly meetings, there are social events, walking groups and so much more.

Wanna be a part of what every other WLS patient is talking about? Email me, Kevin, at kev.lev@tx.rr.com to get on our mailing list and be a part of the success that is THINspirations!

DENTON here! I created a new topic looking for people in my area that are interested in meeting at Starbucks or somewhere to create an awesome support group. I have found that after 6 months food is becoming more of a challenge! I am open to having people meet at my house once I get to know everyone. I love my sleeve but think it would be nice to collaborate with people WHO GET IT!!

- Morganne

See Kevin's post - most of the people in that group live not too far from you and they have Starbucks get-togethers fairly often.

Hi Morganne,

I live in Keller. I was scheduled for surgery on the 21st with Dr. Clayton Frenzel but I started to have some doubts about using him so I am meeting with Dr. Nicholson in Dallas on the 26th. I hate waiting but I want to make sure I am comfortable with the doctor. I love the idea of having people to meet with after I get started on my path to better health.

Thanks for the info. I am trying to find people in Denton or closer. I am so busy with teaching and a 4 year old that I think Frisco and Plano may be to far to travel. I have met a few people in my area that are interested in meeting. I will pass on the information to them. :)

For a once a month meeting...Denton and Keller aren't that far. We have people that come from Forney,. Waxahachie, Oak Point, Prosper, Ft. Worth....

And no reason to wait until after surgery for those that are pre-op. This is a great opportunity to get questions answered from people who've been thru it and you can find people who've used most of the surgeons in the Metrolplex too!

I didn't but I'm in Keller too if you need some in-person support some day :)

Gamergirl -- I'm just north of Flower Mound, but I'm in and around Keller/Roanoke all the time. (We lived just west of the Texas Motor Speedway for seven years until this past summer.). I've been stalking your "What I had for lunch" thread for a long time, and had I known you were just down the road, I might've invited myself over for some of your creative concoctions. :)

I am new to this thread. I am having surgery on the 23rd. I am 4 days in on my pre-op diet. I live in Keller and I am 37 years old. I started a private FB page for January sleevers but having local support would also be great. Biggest thing I am struggling with (besides the liquid diet) is where to find good Protein Drinks and Vitamins and which ones to buy. I am waiting on a tub of Nectar's Roadside Lemonade. Today I tried Isopure coconut and it was the worst thing ever!

Hi bry I'm in nort Fort Worth I have a few misses in the Protein Shakes too. I bought some inividual packages to try, now I'm on purée for another week and drinking one Protein Drink a dat called go lean by labrada, I like the chocolate ice cream flavor. Vitamin Shoppe has them premixed and you can buy individual noses to try. I get my other Protein required from cottage cheese, purée chicken and tuna. I alo bought unflavored protein to put in the sf pudding mixes, and be careful if adding to Soups temp needs to be less than 140 deg for hot liquids or it can clump.

Hi Bry,

I have heard mixing crystal light with the Isopure really helps as well as diluting it with Water. Hope you find what works for you. I also live in Keller! I'm in limbo right now waiting to see a new Dr. Good luck!!!!

Hi, everyone. I live in Plano and was sleeved by Dr. Cribbins on Dec. 31, 2013 at Plano Presby. I had a very good experience and would highly recommend both. They took their time with education and answered all my questions. The hospital floor is nothing but bariatric patients and the nurses know how to manage pain, dry mouth, etc.

I am still on a liquid diet (until Feb. 8) that includes yogurt, pudding, etc., but am looking forward to trying solid foods when I can.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
