SW 261. 6"1" male. 39yo. Surgery BMI 34.4. Surgery was 12-18-15. CW 203lbs. Have lost average of 1.43lbs/week (more in beginning, less now). At that overall rate, I'll reach "normal" BMI (24.9; 190lbs) beginning of December, so almost one year post-surgery. Could have lost more with stricter diet and more exercise, but losing all excess weight within a year is fine with me.

I do think reasonable, attainable goals are important to have in order to avoid being derailed by disappointment. Goals will be different for everyone. My surgeon's goal for everyone is 70% EWL at 12 months, which would be 211lbs for me. I hit that at about 7.5 months post-surgery.

For most people, it is marathon. Not a sprint. The key is steady progress, even if it feels slow. And remember that if you're starting with lower BMI, you're unlikely to see the kind of big monthly losses that higher BMI people see. But it's likely that your loss is fairly proportional to what higher BMI people have.

Good luck to all!

33bmi start - lost all my weight in 5 months - my goal in 6 months for a 22 bmi.

How? I was a vigilante on the carbs. Yes, I agree, they are the devil. Read a post pre-op from another VST lady who kept her carbs to below 30gm a day until hitting goal. She went into ketosis and stayed there. Since I was a self pay for this surgery in the US (big $$$$$) no way was I going to fail again.

So, cut out the crap. Be serious about this and as Nancy Reagan said...Just say NO until you hit goal. You will be thrilled with the results. The less sugar you eat the less your body craves it. Geez, I need to take my own advice, :)

PS - now that I have let carbs and crud back into my diet, I have regained almost 10 lbs from my lowest. Still under surgeons goal but I struggle. My hunger is back....

I was kind of hoping to do the same...stay in ketosis to blast off the weight. The nurses I mentioned it to were like no way that is not the way to do it. I still want to though as long as it won't interfere with my healing.

What is the big danger with ketosis as long as I'm healthy otherwise?

I know this post is a couple years old.. but just saw it in hopes that someone could help me... Im a low BMI'er as well... .

first month I shed about 20 lbs.... Sept 20 makes two months after surgery and I have literally only lost 3 lbs...

now.. to be hohest im not exactly eating 100% no carb.. and " correct" ... but im still eating such small portions....

is this normal to lose this slowly? im scared that I just wasted $$ ( b/c I was self pay ) and that im not going to lose any more weight

@@pnt38

I was lower BMI, and I lost 66 Ibs (30 kg) in 6 months. I am 13 Ibs away from my goal, and 24 Ibs away from my stretch goal.

Here is a link for this forum's Stall info sub-forum:

http://www.bariatricpal.com/forum/1102-dont-sweat-the-stall-stuff/

Loads of good info there.

You can have some carbs, but in form of fruit and green/white non-starchy veggies.

I noticed that whenever I indulged in ice-cream or frozen yoghurt, my weight-loss would stall.

Soonest I stopped eating these sugar laden demons, My weight-loss resumed.

Good luck!

@@pnt38 i just posted a topic yesterday with similar concerns. I'm 2 months out and have lost a TOTAL of 15-16 pounds. I'm 5'1", surgery weight on 7/13 was 189 and i'm now 174. Exercising daily and trying hard to get in at least 50 ounces of Water and 50 grams of Protein daily. I'm wondering if i need to get even more than that? So frustrating. But i understand where you're coming from. I can't imagine going through all this, and spending all the money to just lost 15 pounds.....UGH!

I can't wait until after I am sleeved! I am a low bmi'er too. I am short (5'2") so I feel like every pound shows easily on me. When I first started researching the sleeve I was 205. I have lost 22lbs on my own and am now 183. I have scheduled my surgery with dr. Alvarez on jan. 18th! I am scared, nervous, and excited all at the same time. I am sending in my deposit tomorrow and kind of freaking out about it!

Hi! My surgery was 11/22 at 183lbs; I'm 5'2 also and today I'm 160lbs. You are going to love your sleeve!!!!!!

I'm a BMi of 30 and have been approved for the sleeve. What happens if the weight is lost too soon and i look ill or get too skinny?

It looks like you are at a healthy BMI, congrats!

My gw was to be in the healthy BMI range. My stretch goal was to be closer to the middle of that range, rather than the high end.

I reached first gw 6 months after wls. I think I'm at 150ish right now (I am only weighing every 2 weeks), so I'm really close to my stretch goal. WL is slow but steady. I did encounter a stall of 3 weeks right around 6 months. I actually really do appreciate the lower rate of loss because it's nice and gradual and not so shocking to me or to others (although I still look at myself and sometimes can't believe it's me).

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
