Has Anyone Developed Acid Reflux Since Surgery?

Recommended Posts

OMG! My acid is so bad! I basically sleep sitting up & that still doesn't help. I take 2 pepcids a day & countless tums throughout the day. The burning from the acid wakes me up at night. I'm counting down the days till it calms down... Thanks for the idea to go off the meds slowly Rootman. I would have just stopped at about 6 months!

My surgeon prescribed a ppi for at least 3 months. Some have to take it forever. So 3 months. Nothin trying to go on. If you still have reflux do another 3 months. Then try to go off. Do this for about a year and if you still don't see any improvement you may be one that has to do it forever.

I had never had reflux before getting my sleeve, after it was just horrible it never let up, every single day, my doctor changed my meds 5 times and still no relief. I went and saw my Gastrienteroligist he told me to stop them, well I nearly fell of my chair cause I had read about acid rebound being worse, he said some tablets mask the reflux and make it worse. I did what I was told and can gladly say my reflux is 90% better, just the lump in the throat feeling every now and again I now take slippery elm - of course this may not work for everyone.

I was told today there are two types of people. Those that liquid goes through quickly which are the majority and those that liquids go through slowly after surgery. I am one of the lucky ones. The flouro scope showed liquids go through my stomace in seconds. In this case I shoud not have any kind of acid reflux issues, but I am still to take omeprazole until I am healed to prevent issues. My guess that will be at week 5.

i have reflux PRE-op but after a big talk with the doc, we both believe that a good amount will be relieved after all of my belly weight is gone ( i carry it ALL there and often get asked when i'm due)...

i have been on either Aciphex, Nexium or Protonix for the past 13 years and have never planned to go off of it.

doc says remain on PPI for at least a year or until my abd weight is gone, then we'll wean and see.

i'm ok taking a PPI for life if necessary to be thin and otherwise healthy!

Well I am 10 months out and have had acid reflux since I had the surgery. I posted about this in another post because I wanted to know was anyone else having it all the time. I have it everyday no matter if I eat or drink something its there. I wake up with it and sometimes it comes in the middle of the night. I am taking omeprazole once a day and some days it works and others I have to take it twice a day. So, I think I am going to be one of those people who have to take it forever.

I have a ?

My doctor didn't prescribe me anything for reflux. I had my sleeve done 5/28, an also had a hernia fixed at the same time. He dud tell me with the hernia being fixed I wouldn't have to worry about reflux.

should I be worried?

*Knocks on wood* I haven't had acid reflux at all since my surgery on 5/5/14, and my surgeon did not Rx me any meds for it either.

I had it pre-op pretty severely but didn't know it as it presented as nocturnal coughing. I had been treated for asthma for 10 years, (unsuccessfully). They found and fixed a hiatial hernia during my procedure which was contributing to the problem. For the first month post op, the problem was worse. I was told that this is a "reflux inducing surgery" due to the fact that they create a higher pressure digestive system. I was put on 40mg of Omeprazole 2x day which eventually got things under control. Today, at 7 months out I take 40 mg Omeprazole only at night and am managing well. I hope to be off of it eventually, but am prepared for the fact I may have to take it forever. Not the worst thing in the world. It's the only prescription I take now and I had been taking 10 different prescriptions 7 months ago!

Bikrchk, I am in a similar situation. I had it pre-op but never had the obvious symptoms, only a chronic cough. I was told my cough was allergies for years. The only clue that I'd had acid for years was the amount of scar tissue it had caused. I am nearly six months out and still have reflux, only difference is I feel it now. I take Omeprazole, I was taking it once a day (my own arbitrary decision simply because I don't like to take man made drugs for anything) but after my endoscopy last week, doc wants me to go back to twice a day. Not the end of the world IF the meds keep it under control long term. The thing I worry about is what if the meds quit working at some point - then what? I guess I shouldn't borrow trouble, for now the meds keep it under control.

I had the same issue I started taking nexium and Pepcid and it helps a lot but Pepcid by it self did nothing I was eating tums like candy nothing but the two combined seemed to work for now .

Dr says I need to get regular abd it will go away I not sure if that's the case

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
