Surgery was 8/28. I am 39 days out and I am feeling some frustration

1. I have lost 27 lbs, my weight loss is 1-2 lbs a week. Am I on track? Is this normal? I feel like I should see a difference in myself or my clothes, but I don't!

2. I can't tell when I am full! I eat a very small amount of food and I take 15-30 minutes to eat, but I always stop too late, I feel sick almost everytime I eat and if I less, I get hungry within a few hours. Does this ever stop?

3. I am exhausted. I take all of my Vitamins, I get good sleep every night and I just get overwhelmingly exhausted everyday within hours of waking up. Does anyone else go through this?

Surgery 8/28/12

Weight DOS- 275.6

Current weight- 248.2

Hi, I understand your frustration! I had my surgery on 8/20/12 I have only lost a total of only 10 pounds :( I am still on full liquids with the exception of one poached egg for Breakfast. My calories are limited to 400-500 a day ? My diet consists of one poached egg, 1 costco Protein Shake and 4 oz of low sodium Tomato Soup with Unjury Protein Powder and 50-60 oz of Water per day. No one has any answers as to why I am not loosing weight? They say they have never heard of that before and to just be thankful that I am not gaining weight? Your post is the only thing I've come across that is similar, but you are lucky to have lost 27 pounds, you are 17 pounds ahead of me.

I had my surgery 8/23/12 and I'm also losing weight slowly. I have lost 23.5lbs. I noticed that increasing my calories was what helped me lose those last 5lbs. Idk if I'm supposed to consume only 800 calories a day but doing research, I've found that you need to consume calories to burn calories and 800 calories puts your body in starvation mode and you store fat. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I'm also burning about 900 calories a day and I eat every 3 hours.

My experience is very similar to yours. I think that once I start eating more I will feel better, but every meal is an ordeal. I have to make myself eat, after 2 or 3 bites I am disgusted with the food. Nothing tastes good. I think it's just a matter of time, most comments I have read say that it takes several months to get back to feeling "normal." Good luck, hang in there!

Hi there!

So have a look around and you will find a few threads like this :)

Basically, there is no "normal"! Everybody is different!

A few points to consider though:

*starvation mode! At certain times of stress and/or rapid weight loss your body will stop burning fat and cling to it! It will take in everything you give it! This is a physiological response to famine. There are certain ways to break this, but usually you have to be patient and understanding of your body in this difficult time. It will pass on its own. This is usually why most people break their"diets", they are starving but stop seeing the scales move and get demotivated! Don't fall into this old habit! You're a new you!!!

*everybody has different metabolism response. Some people respond ok to carbs, they have no affect on their weightloss but they find they get very fatigued if they don't incorporate enough. Some people seem to gain a pound if they nibble half a slice of bread!!! This can be corrected with the help of a nutritionist, but usually people just figure it out on their own. If you are diabetic you WILL find most carbs ruin any chance of weightloss and you should stick to only small amounts of fresh fruit as your carb source.

*exercise. Now some people who are obese do A LOT of daily movement, known as incidental exercise. They work as laborers or nurses, running around all day. Their bodies are accustomed to this and they will need to add high cardio (usually in little jolts: ie running up a flight of stairs as fast as they can five times a day, doing twenty star jumps five times a day) to get their heart rate up high enough to burn fat. Some people are very sedentary and will find just walking around the block will get the sweat going. Just remember, unless your sweating you're not typically burning fat. So do a large amount of good easy exercise to build muscle (house work, work, walking, swimming etc) and then add a few sweat-inducing activities when you are comfortable.

Good luck, trust in your sleeve, and remember that cheating is cheating on yourself only- be accountable to yourself and you will do fine!

I'm in the same boat. Surgery was 8/21. I've lost 6 or so pounds postop. I am working closely w my NUT. Yesterday she switched up my plan. 20 or less (less is preferable) carbs. That's my only restriction. I can have unlimited calories & fats, etc.

To ME, it looks like you just aren't getting enough food in your system. Are you eating or drinking a Protein shake every 3 hours?

@rockafam, we were the almost same starting weight, off by 3lbs. And we are the exact same weight now, to the ounce. I was sleeved August 30, and I have lost 30lbs. After reading other post op posts, I think we are right on target. I am actually going through a stall right now, and haven't lost anything in 2 weeks. But I have complete faith that the rest is yet to come, off that is.lol Be encouraged. hun.

Thank you everyone e for your replies! I am drinking around 50 oz of liquid a day. I am still trying to hit 64 oz but have trouble getting that in without gulping and still eating, but each day I get a little closer. As for Protein Shakes, my stomach no longer handles them. I try to get as much Protein as I should by my food. I eat alot of chicken, tuna, cheese, Beans, and just bought some Protein Bars.< /p>

Are you tracking your intake? I wasn't and thought i was getting enough protein but when I started to track on MFP I realized that I was falling short on my protein.

You need to get between 60-90 grams of Protein a day... in order for your body to burn FAT instead of your muscles, you have to eat protein... otherwise you will not see the fat go.

I had surgery on August 9th. I have lost between 30-35 pounds... I say that you are doing great.

Just think - instead of gaining weight or maintaining weight YOU ARE LOSING... I do not know about you, but it has been 17 years since I could say that honestly.

Keep your chin up - eat more slowly... chew a lot more. If you cannot do Protein shakes, you may be lactose intolerant - try muscle milk or another lactose free Protein. Really try to get as much protein and liquids as possible. You want to keep your muscle and your HAIR!!!

You can do this - a year from now, we will be gorgeously thinner and healthier... just imagine! B)

Slimmom & Rockafam,

I was sleeved 8/28 too, my weight on the DOS was 271 and I now weigh 249, so we're practically sleeve triplets. I stalled for 2 weeks and increased my Fluid intake and broke the stall. Let's motivate each other. I met my first goal of being under 250, my next one is to be in onederland by 2013! Are y'all exercising?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
