How Many Carbs Are You Eating?

Recommended Posts

I don't really count my carbs, just my calories. I eat more carbs when I feel like my body needs some, which isn't every day. Usually I consume in small amounts, something like whole grain bread or brown rice.

I just today went to my doctor and my NUT for my 9 month appointment. I just have 5 more lbs. til my goal and I was asking about number of carbs and calories to maintain. I was told by both that until I lose my final 5 lbs., I need to stay between 800-1.000 calories and then move up to 1,200 when I get to goal to maintain. The carbs should be at no more than 60g per day while still losing and when at goal, should not exceed 150g per day. I am not even close to either! I can barely get in 900 caloires a day and I don't even get in 30g per day. I hope I can start to eat more!

I try to stay under 40...if I go over 40, I will workout that day so I can have more carbs....carbs are okay....as long as you eat complex carbs...not simple sugars....

I think mine are under 20 because I stick mostly to pure Proteins like chicken or salmon and shakes. The reason for the ambivelance is because I only track Protein gram counts and liquid ounce counts. I might increase the carbs soon to include more low glycemic foods, but for now I have a good thing going. Calories are probably around 600- 800 calories and I am never hungry or tired because of eating 6 times a day in small amounts ( 3 oz solid protein or 8 oz shakes with water). Good luck.

Don't be nervous. When you get to regular foods, you should be able to eat anything if your sleeve handles it. I am a little over 10 months out and to my goal. I can eat anything! My sleeve must be made of steel cuz nothing bothers it. There may be some things you find you don't even want anymore. In my case, my taste buds changed a little. You will just need to eat much less (because you have to cuz you can't eat a lot) and eat in moderation, and drink a lot. You will be able to go out to eat and everything with no problem, so everything will be fine. Don't even think now of what you will be able to eat later. Think about how much healthier you will be and what great things you are doing for your body and the rest of your life. Good luck on your journey!

I don't have a NUT so I wasn't advised on an exact number.. just to keep it low and eat Protein first and avoid 'sugar'. I just looked at my MFP and I've been getting anywhere from 40-90 grams of carbs/day. I also get 60-80 grams protein and all my Water and Vitamins. I typically get 500-800 cal/day, usually closer to 700-800 range for the last couple weeks. I had surgery on 9-14-12 and weighed 264 the week of surgery... today I weigh 225 lbs.. so it's working very well for me!

I'm six months out and my usual carb count is around 30g or so, sometimes a little higher. I eat mostly pure Protein, but I also eat yogurt, drink milk, and eat fruit so that's where my carbs come from. I'm still not eating bread or rice, etc., and won't until I get to maintenance. I've tried breads and rice, etc., and I tolerate them just fine, but they are so filling and so I choose protein mostly.

now I'm gonna have to go look at where my carbs are coming from because I'm eating the same.. Protein shakes with fat free milk, some fruit, FF cottage cheese, FF string cheese, SF popsicles on occasion, tuna and chicken salad, etc. I haven't had any bread or rice or tortillas yet and I'm not adding sugar/starches to anything..

been thinking about trying to find a bariatric nutrition class or even just an in depth class because there are SO many additives these days!!!

I do 60 carbs a day. I work out 6 hours a week. I could not live on 20 or 30 a day and feel well . I make sure 80% are complex carbs. Makes a huge difference.

I don't work out yet so could explain how 20 carbs a day works for me. My energy levels are normal, but I am no energizer bunny yet. I have enough energy to feel pretty goof from 5 am to 9 or 10 pm. I do walk a lot. It has been working great so far. I think exercise that some are doing is a little extreme and overrated. 3 hours a day 6-7 days a week. Sorry, I cannot devote that amount of time, only about an hour for hilly and brisk walking. I am sweating at end so feel like I am getting a good hour of exercise and my dog loves it. Down 115 since 7-2 with 40 to go. No lose skin (

120+ oz of Protein daily might be helping with this). I am getting quite lean and have a good muscle tone everywhere. I used to be an exercise junky when heavier before sleeve, but it didn't really do anything when diet was screwed up with too much food and the wrong type of food. I would exercise for 2-3 hours a day on treadmill and ellyptical. I am glad current plan is working for me. I encourage others to find something that works for them. I am sharing my plan in case it helps someone.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
