My husband eats them (he's on a low-carb, Atkins-type diet). I sometimes steal one or two from him. :)

But generally I find that it has the potential for me to be addictive and nutritionally void (very high in fat, even though it's super low in carbs!). Not to mention the high calorie count!

So as a rule, I'm not a pork-rind eater, even though they make great chip substitutes (they can be good as crouton substitutes in a salad though.....in small amounts!).

I have thought of Pork rinds, are they healthy for us to eat, or a good source of Protein?

I have thought of Pork rinds, are they healthy for us to eat, or a good source of Protein?

Generally speaking, a 15g "serving" (about 9 small pieces) of pork rinds are about 90-100 calories, with 5-6 g of fat, 300 mg of sodium, 20 mg of cholesterol and 6-7 g of Protein (with only 1 g of carbs).

That sounds pretty good. But let's dig a little deeper.

If you were to eat 100 calories worth of grilled chicken breast (approx. 2 oz), you would have approx 1 g of fat, 10 mg of sodium, 10 mg of cholesterol and 6 g of protein (with 0 g of carbs).

So for about the same amount of calories and protein, you're saving 4-5 g of fat, 290 mg of sodium and 10 mg of cholesterol by eating grilled chicken breast rather than pork rinds.

Yes, pork rinds are fun, crunchy and yummy! But let's remember they are NOT an alternative to better, cleaner more healthy protein such as chicken, fish, etc. Keeping that in mind, if you want to have a small pork rind treat once in a while, go for it!

Just be well informed in your choices!

Thanks for the comparison, makes sense. I just can't wait to eat meat, I am in the first stage of soft foods. I do miss my crunchy foods though.

Go slow when you start on meat, especially beef. It is quite difficult to digest and is very dense. It will fill you up fast and in the beginning, we're terrible judges of how much food we can eat.

I still weigh everything to make sure I don't eat too much and end up in pain.

Since the "stretchy" portion of our stomach is removed, the stretch receptors in our stomach that usually tells our brain we're full is now gone. Before surgery, if we ate few bites after the "signal" made it to our brain, it wasn't a problem, as we had stretch areas left to handle the "overflow".

Now we have no extra capacity and even ONE bit more than our full mark can make us nauseous, throw up and in alot of pain.

I started by weighing out a total of 2-3 oz of food and going very slowly. I am now about 3 1/2 months post-op and I can eat about 5-6 oz at a time, but I still occasionally overeat and suffer!

Just wondering when I can eat the Pork rinds. I am 3 weeks out. I know that I probably cannot eat them yet. Just wondering when?

I eat Pork rinds all the time. I keep a bag at my desk. Those with hummus are a kickass snack. My generic Hot & Spicy Pork Rinds label reads:

Serving size .5 oz

Fat 5g

Sodium 250mg

Carb 0mg

Protein 8g

I'll eat them with hummus mostly, but I've had them with Peanut Butter too (plain). But that is really the only time I use them. When I am eating hummus. For salsa I will use celery sticks. Pita chips and tortilla chips have about 100 calories every 4 chips!

I just needed the Protein. Anymore I don't care about the palette.

Sent from my phone, please forgive brevity and misspelling

I don't eat Pork rinds like chips but I do crunch them up and use them as a replacement to flour for breading things like chicken. Tasty.

I eat Pork rinds we have a company here in New Zealand that does free range rinds in an assortment of flavours they are about $8 for one 30 gram packet of rinds so not cheap I went through a stage of eating them almost daily then I noticed they repeat on me for hours.

they are nice and crunchy but I have to cut any excess fat off the rind as I can't stomach it.

We did this just last night. My wife has an air fryer and she made mozzarella sticks with pork rind "breading".

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
