What Was Your Final "straw That Broke The Camels Back"

Recommended Posts

@ liztex! I think fear of being alone is a valid one! I had bullies (including my older sister) who always told me no man would want me because if my weight! That's been proven untrue on multiple occasions ;) but I was more worried no man would want me coz I'm a nutcase! Lol

At twenty five myself I am worried I will never be able to have children with my partner! I'm hoping this surgery will help with that! But for me it's not really going to begin until mid next year- so im being patient :)

Be patient too, we have made the decision not to die young- so now in every sense of it we have our whole lives ahead!!!

Good luck!!!

Good to know!! :) Best of luck on the baby-makin' !

For me, it was a couple of things...First, I have been dieting since I was 9...I have run the gamut from too-skinny to where I am today...WAY too big. I now have asthma and plantar fascitis, so movement has become difficult/painful... 2 of my friends at work had VSG, and are looking and feeling fabulous! They have been very encouraging and supportive.

Second, I am an old first-time mom. I adopted my daughter a few months before my 40th birthday...She is now 3, and the joy of my life. But, being a single mom takes a lot of energy, which can be a struggle. I've always been active and enjoy exercise, and I want to model healthy living for my daughter, PLUS enjoy her childhood. I don't want to be the mom on the bench, unable to run around or play with my girl. My daughter deserves to have a healthy parent who will be alive to raise her...the thought of orphaning her (for the 2nd time in her life) is very scary.

My insurance required a 6-month class, which I finished the end of July...I am starting the labs and etc, and SHOULD be having surgery 11/14. :-) I am SO excited about this...but I dread leaving my kiddo for 2 nights in the hospital. I have only been away from her overnight twice; once for gall bladder surgery, and once for 12 hrs for a bday party. My mom is coming to stay for 2 weeks, and that should help...my daughter LOVES Grandma!! :-)

I love this site, and the exchange of info, and support/advice given here. :-)

Can't wait to join y'all on the loser's bench!!! YEAH!!

I had been over 200 pounds since my husband died 14 years ago. I didn't really care untill my second colonoscopy came back with dysplastic (on it's way to becoming malignant) polyps. Add to that 2 weeks later my PCP put me on 2 MORE meds for high triglycerides for a total of 8 prescription meds. I will be 60 next year & I decided I wasn't going to finish my time on earth as a morbidly obese woman.

I have many more reasons that what I can post, but the main one? Seeing myself in pictures in November (which is on my profile as my "before") and going to my gyno in Dec for my annual. All 9 months of my pregnancy, even ballooning at the end, he never said a single solitary word about my being too heavy. Not once.. and at the end, I ballllooooooned (to me I feel like I did).

Since my parents both died (one of a heart attack, the other of cancer .. then another grandmother with a massive heart attack) and I saw him in Dec, he told me ... you are playing with fire with your health history, it's time to take control of your life, essentially.

There were many other things, but that was the 'final' one.

There wasn’t any single moment, I just got tired:

I got tired of feeling like I had to apologize for the way I looked.

I got tired of feeling uncomfortable in my own skin.

I got tired of wearing clothes I didn’t like or fit.

I got tired of fighting my own biology.

I got tired of being a walking scale.

I got tired of being preached at.

I got tired of being labeled.

So on to the next phase of my life. I should have my surgery by February (2013). The bad news, I’m self-pay. The good news I don’t have to jump through insurance company hoops. Just one more doctor appointment and I’ll get my surgery date.

Already making an effort to loose weight, down about 14lbs. Just less to loose later.

Greetings All,

Boy there have been many straws that have been stacking up on that poor camel's back.

1. Went to see the show. I could not fit comfortably in my seat. My hubby and I stood in the back.

2. I had a nice gelding that I ended up selling because I could not ride anymore. I had him for 12 years and it broke my heart.

3. I love to travel but I wont because I am embarassed to deal with the seating.

4. Went recently to a horse training thing to be certified as an equine facilitated learning equine specialist. One of the participants asked me if I was comfortable around horses. They assumed that because I was heavy I wasn't a horseperson.

5. I am embarassed because I take the elevator up at work. I walk down but huff and puff going up so I rarely do. I pass much older folk taking the stairs up to get to the elevator.

6. Seat belts!

7. My son realizing I am heavier than many other adults.

8. I want to go riding with my horse friends. They go to sweet camping trips and trail rides that I cannot do anymore.

9. Clothes!

10. chaffing!

11. aching ankles and knees.

and the list goes on!!!

Looking forward to starting my processes!

Attempting to get on a flight and the obviously very scared attendant alluding to me needing an additional seat and having to call for a supervisor to approve. They were considering a less full flight which would have created another slew of inconveniences in my schedule. Im 13days out til surgery and dying with the liquid diet but I have a flight to catch in November and Im ready to latch that seat belt.without an extender.

It wasn't the final straw, but I was always a big fan of John candy. When he died at 44, that was scary. And it got scarier as I approached 44. I'm 43 now, and I kinda feel like I'm averting that tragedy for myself.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
