Ok Im Confused!

Recommended Posts

So I should be done with my 6 month prep stuff by September and I'm stuck on whether to get the sleeve or bipass:/ I was set on a sleeve and so was my nutritionist and endocrinologist, but my psychologist (prep requirement to see the shrink lol) said my body just wants to be fat and I should do the bipass. GRRRRR now I'm confused! I am 270, and 5'4 I'm really thinking I'll be happy at 160 because I still wants some thickness and curves lol. What to do ughhhhh:(

Then question is what do u think is best? Its ur body and ur the one who will have to LIVE with ur decision. Do what U feel best doing and dont let anyone change ur mind. Best wishes to u as u continue ur journey! :-)

I'm really on the sleeve side mainly because there are less risks/complications, and thanks to this app I see there is still success with the sleeve not just the bipass. She just threw me off saying my body wanted to be fat.....I actually sat there thinking if I smack u then I'll be marked crazy for sure lol!

This is a decision that you really need to make.....its good to get input from others, but you need to make the decision....

The people on here are very supportive and will answer questions, but the question you are asking is one that you need to decide on....

WLS is a big decision to make, picking which one to do is to me an even bigger decision because there are many, and people react differently to different procedures....

Good luck with whatever you decide...

Hi,

I personally think you should not listen to the psychologist. This is a decision you should research and decide for yourself. Plus your other doctors agree that the sleeve would be good for you. I also think that for me, the rerouting of my intestines and dumping and possible Vitamin deficiency is too much. I am 5' 1 and 269 pounds ands I also want to have curves. I am thinking my goal is anywhere from 150-175. I pray you have clarity on what you should do.

Lol.. Wow. This was the Psychiatrist, right? How can she make that assumption? Shouldnt that be for ur surgeon, pcp,or even nutritionist to determine?... How the heck would she know? Lol. I say have a conversation with ur doctor and/surgeon to be reassured of ur decision. Ull be fine...

Not to sound rude but when did a psychologist become qualified to say what is best for you? That seems a bit out of line in my opinion. I always thought the point of the psychologist was to recommend to the doctor that you were mentally stable enough for the surgery, not which he thinks you should do. Me personally, I would go with what the actual doctors thinks is best and what you feel is best for you. There is a lot to weigh when it comes to Bypass. I have a few girlfriends who have had the bypass and they have been through a lot and deal with a range of different issues. I say all of this to say, make sure you do your research, weigh the pro's and con's for both, and then ultimately do what you and your doctor feel is best for you and your situation.

I am a firm believer in therapy for our food issues, but the psychologist who did my pre-op evaluation was and is a NUTJOB. She told me that I WOULD be an alcoholic after surgery, but still gave me a pass for the surgery. F her and the horse she rode in on. I'm not a drunk, not even close. I have other addictions and I'm trying really hard to make one of them exercise. :) (VST qualifies as an addiction, right?)

Your psyche person should have kept her unqualified medical opinion to herself. You and your surgeon are the only people who can decide or dictate what procedure you should have. I'd def tell the surgeon's staff that the psyche person is offering up her unsolicited opinions on medical procedures. That may sway who they use for future patients. You need to do what is best for you. :)

Thank you everyone:)

Yes I totally believe they aren't all there themselves because she also mentioned me being addicted to carbs is potential crack addiction as well. I was like WHAT THE F&"@ I am a mother of 2 and have no alcohol/drug addictions!

Ok so I have a bachelors and masters in social work of all things. I wanted to be a counselor in the long run and it was interesting course work, as well as I was young and wanted to "make the world a better place" blah blah. That being said... there are MANY people who go into such professions or career paths to FIX themselves. They have issues. (hmm, is applicable to me as i am in the category); however, I digress....

the point is... what do YOU want?

ok, what i think i know on bypass: you are supposed to lose more weight with it if you are significantly overweight (not that i'm saying you are! just clarifying... but i think this is questionable and to be determined as there hasn't been enough research yet on VSG/aka sleeve at this time); however, you have dumping issues, malabsorption issues and from the latest thing i read on something here, if you don't make the stomach smaller, will you in the long run eat less with bypass (that they also refer to as RNY)?

sleeve doesn't have malabsorption issues (you have to take a Multivitamin and Calcium citrates after surgery, then i also take Biotin as you will lose some hair, you will... just know and accept it). sleeve's biggest complications that i know of are leaks (which i had and it sucks but... it's over). i can eat anything that i want, i just eat much much less..... i have seen some people have gallbladder issues after surgery, some that have sever heartburn. i don't know the percentages on it, but know these are drawbacks that have existed and been experienced by others. hmm what else....

ok so if any of this is inaccurate, politely tell me so. that's what i recall in my rushed reply. and i believe you should tune in to YOUR VOICE. what do you want? listen to that, know your wants are VALID and fight for what you want. i believe so many of us overweight persons have learned to no longer believe in ourselves, to invalidate our wants/needs which is such an easy message we get from every facet in this world... and that's one of the biggest things in this journey i'm learning to be confident in. listening to what i want and knowing that it's ok. and that i'm totally f'n worth it.

just know that you probably have a food addiction. i know i do and it's one ugly beast to get rid of. but the sleeve, to me, is a great tool to help fight it.

sorry for my rambling... wish you only the best! xx

Nena, My psyche ended up being a revision patient with major complications afterwards. The last support group meeting that I attended with her (late July), she spent the entire meeting telling a pre-op and two new sleevers her horror story. I did report her to the surgeon when I saw him and recommended that he find someone ANYONE else to lead those meetings. I owe the pre-op a phone call, which I just remembered.

Carb addiction is a bad thing, but I doubt carbs lead to crack! LMAO Carbs are NOT a gateway drug to anything except obesity, IMO.

Truthfully, I think the sleeve is better than bypass because the sleeve does not have the dumping complication that many experience from the bypass. The sleeve also doesn't require re-routing the internal plumbing, which means recovery is much easier.

Do what you and your doctor think is best for you! :) Good luck.

I struggled with the decision, too. I finally had to ask myself "why" and "why not" for each procedure. I finally decided that the portion of the stomach that produces the hunger hormone being removed would help me more than malabsorption. I had a HUGE appetite before surgery. That is just me. Some people don't eat that much but their bodies are too efficient in processing food to get energy......they may be happier with the bypass. Make it your decision----and make sure you can verbalize WHY before you commit to one,

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
