Getting Vsg At 22

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

Just thought I would post in the forum! I got approved today for an August 22nd date. I got lucky in the fact that my insurance was actually pretty easy to work with and I got approved the first time I applied. I'm enjoying reading everyone's stories on here and am very glad I am having the surgery before I head back to school in September!

So good to know I'm not the only one in their early twenties having surgery. I'm 24 and having surgery on aug 21st. Do you guys ever get asked by other wls patients "arnt you too young to have surgery"??

I am 24 and getting sleeved on sept 25. I wish I was doing this like five years ago! And no one has told me I am too young. Not yet anyways...

Hey everyone! I am 22 and will be getting it done 2 days before my 23rd birthday :) so I will be in the hospital on my birthday but what a great gift right? To be getting my life back :) good luck to everyone else! Its really nice to know other people around my age are getting this done as well...I was very concerned that I am to young to be going to this extreme but honestly...I couldn't be happier!!

Oh gosh, I am the baby! I am 20 and got my sleeve in March during my spring break. I was back at work and school as soon as it started! Best decision ever! Everyone was saying that I was too young, but I couldn't imagine waiting 20 more years.

usually i was told that i made a great decision by not waiting until i am older, which i agree with! if anyone gives you a hard time just remember they dont have to live inside your body!

Agreed! My surgeon does sleeves as young as 16.

I am 22 and was just sleeved 5 days ago! Recovery has been great so far! My family and boyfriend were against it , but they eventually came to accept it and are now very supportive. They never left my side in the hospital.

Not getting a hard time from anyone, but when talking with other wls patients in the waiting room when I visit the dr, it's a common question I get. I'm glad I'm doing it so young, I wouldn't want it any other way. Honestly have only heard beneficial things by doing my surgery now than 10 years from now.

Yeah I don't know how many times I have heard and read that people wished they had done it sooner. I am 24 and even I wish I had done this sooner!

I don't think you need to tell people you got the sleeve. I told two good friends and then my mom dad and sisters. Everyine agreed that it is a personal choice and that I shouldnt feel like I owe it to everyone i know to explain myself. You can simply say you're doing a medically supervised diet or just say you are making healthier choices! I've accepted that no matter how great of a speech I come up with on why or why not I chose to have the sleeve done, there will always be people with a judgmental opinion. I do think it's good to find a couple friends to confide in though so you don't feel alone in the process :). Good luck!

Hey ladies! So glad we have a 20's something section on this forum. Other than having the surgery itself, it's kind of hard relating to other older members sometimes lol. I'm 24 and was sleeved this last Wednesday, August 8th. I'm glad I got it now as opposed to down the road when my comorbidities from being obese had caught up to me, AND the surgery would be more risky. Plus that, our twenties are supposed to be some of the best youth years-- we're fabulous ;P.

The only reason I told everyone I was getting surgery is because I'm a nurse and it would be hard to hide the evidence from fellow nurses. Plus I'm a terrible liar lol. I don't care what people think.

Best of luck to the pre-ops!!! Be excited!!!

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
