Tattoo Or Not To Tattoo

Recommended Posts

I had told myself that my reward for reaching 100 pound weight loss was to finally get a tattoo. I'm getting close to that goal and am getting excited. I am getting a small one on my back over the right shoulder blade. My concern is that I still have another 100 pounds to go and am worried it could change the shape of look of the tattoo. Suggestions or comments??? Please!?!

I would not do the tattoo at this time. I would make it your ultimate goal. You could have to have plastic surgery for loose skin or any myriad of things.

I recommend meeting with a tattoo artist to design the tattoo you are interested in and then wait until you have lost all the weight to have it done.

Just my 2 cents--

I agree about waiting. For two reasons. If you lose another 100 pounds, you will have some pretty dramatic body shape changes. Particularly towards the end, when there will be lots more skin and way less of the fat that has kept us filled out. Second, a tattoo is permanent. Spend time choosing both a design and an artist. Ask people you see where they got their's and if you really like it (and it shows talent, not just paint between the numbers) go see the artist. Certain ones like photos and complex people really require a specialist.

You might get something small that is shaped in way that it is not likely to get distorted. Then after the next 100 add to it, or get another one.

What kind of tattoo are you looking for? I am not a tattoo guy (my son has enough for both of us) I have just never thought of anything so cool and so timeless that I would want it forever. I wish you could change them like those electronic photo frames. That would be cool. Best of luck. And whatever you decision be sure to put up a picture on your profile.

I would definitely wait until you are at goal, or at least near goal. It might make a difference in your tattoo's final position. It would be a bummer to get it done, and then wish later that it was in a slightly different place!

I would wait until I was done loosing all the weight as well. I don't have any tattoo's; although, my bestie is trying to talk me into it and I might give in one day, but the thought of the pain...LOL!

I personally just put off having a tattoo done for this very reason and have decided to have it done when I am close to goal so that I know exactly whether excess skin will come into play. It is permanent - none of us would be happy to have a lopsided tattoo because of changes to the elasticity and draping of the skin.

What are you planning on getting, if you don't mind me asking?

Your skin will not stop shrinking till 2years after your surgery. With this knowledge I think I'd wait on the tattoo save up & make sure I could have it done by one of the best artists in the country. The last thing you want to do is have something permanent on your body hat you will regret.

i have wanted to get a tatoo for quite a while.

I am 7 1/2 months PO - 85 lbs down, 15 lbs til goal

i have 3 of the most adoreable grandkids in the world - present company excluded of course ;)

i want their 3 initials put on my palm, or the back of my hand. - nothing gigantic - just small and cute, like they are, and totally timeless ;)

bratvp63 your skin will shrink during your extra 100 lb weight loss , so wait a while before tatoo

like others said, you'll have hanging skin after WL - so wait a a year or so, til things "stop hanging" around so much ;)

good luck -with tatoo

your weight loss is great

Thanks to everyone, I think I will wait. My mother is a watercolor artist and I'm going to have her come up with a floral design that they can duplicate so that way i'll always have a piece of her with me. I appreciate everyone's response.

I would go for it you might create a cool peice of abstract art(good story to tell). When do go make sure it is a good artist and the shop is well known and clean(one of my six was done by artist named Rusty Savage).

Take it from someone who has gained and lost and gained 130.. The expansion and shrinkage has caused havoc to my Tat.

I think waiting and saving up for a really good artist to consult you on the tat ad wait until you are out a bit would be best ...

I have 8 tattoos(all were done before surgery) and now only 1(on my chest above my upper left breast) is changing. I've developed a tremendous amount of extra skin in my breast area(sorry TMI) in the last 3 months and it isn't looking so great. I'm actually in the process of having it removed! Best advice wait until your at or near goal so it will be absolutely beautiful!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
