Anyone Else With High Tsh Results?

Recommended Posts

So my labs are trickling in and my TSH level came back 2 points above the "range." I haven't spoken to the doctor, but the lab told me it could indicate possible hypothyroidism UGH! Also, I may be pre-hypoglycemic.

Just wondering if anyone else had similar results in the prelabs and what were ur doctor's recommendation.

I've been hypothyroid all my adult life. It's not a difficult thing to fix--meds typically work pretty well and are not that expensive. I'm on daily Synthroid. It's important to monitor your thyroid because it affects metabolism (and may play a role in how we got overweight in the first place!). Post surgery, the dose required to keep me in the normal range has decreased, but I do still need to take it.

I too have had hypothyroidism for most of my adult life. Have to take one pill a day and get labs done at least once a year or more if I start to feel sluggish and easy fatigued. I had been readjusted several times over the years. I know when it goes off as my hair starts to fall out and I am very tired. I have also had heart palps but as soon as the meds are adjusted and my blood levels get where they need to go I am fine. Good luck!

Same for me I take synthroid once a day and have levels checked every six months. Things are okay as long as I take my meds... good luck !

What really blows me, I have been on a supervised weight loss program for 1 year. They told me they tested me and I was "normal." However, I was not losing the beginning and then they put me on low carbs. So I lost like 18lbs in like 7 months. It is also very easy for me to gain. Especially when I travel. I truly believe going from a high altitude back to normal altitude just crushes me. Anyway, while I was stateside in MAY 2012, I even went to my GYN and they supposedly tested me too, again normal....I am kinda blown at this point. Because if I am diagnosed with hypothyroidism and I have been busting my ass for a year with little results and have a valid medical reason why, I will have spent the last year in vein.

I was also informed when I had my lab work done that I have hypothyroidism. But my THS leve was at 13 which was way over the normal range. If I remember correctly the high end of normal was 4.86. So I had to go to my primary care doctor and like others mentioned was put on medication. Right now I go back every 12 weeks for a blood draw so we can see what my levels are at and adjust my medication. I do have more energy now.

I know the feeling.... it took 4 yrs to finally get the diagnosis! I had all the symptoms but according to my family doc and ob/gyn I was normal. Finally found an endocrinologist that don't just go by labs.. he actually treats the symptoms.

There are two different blood tests for thyroid and some docs do not check off the TSH box. it is possible for the other test to come back "normal" but the TSH still be off. Not sure I understand why but that is what I was told. So, bottom line the TSH from what I understand is the definative test. Sorry you have this additional issue to deal with but mine stays pretty well under control. I take my synthroid in the morning along with my multi vit, D3 tablet and my antidepressant and I am good to go!! You will be too!!

ok - color me a moron - but is this test done as a part of your normal full blood work up? I can't find the initials TSH anywhere on the printout of my lab results.

Yeah, I can wait to see what the surgeon says, but I am a bit frustrated.

Look for T3 or T4 those are tested along with the TSH.... to my knowledge it is included in a full blood work up

hummmm well they are not on my blood work report from May - but had to do blood work for this surgery and just called the dr's office and asked them to email the results to me so I could compare with May's results. Maybe my PCP didn't do a FULL workup, as we were mainly checking for diabetes - which came back for A1c at 6.5....hoping to see an improvement. I am not on any meds becuase my PCP knew I was having WLS - will do another blood workup about 3 months after I have the surgery.

I would definitely check it out ... tsh is usually one of the first things checked. My A1C is at 5.9 with a little bit of weight loss

Yes, I think the one test is for the actual functioning of the thyroid, the other is for the hormone and you are right, they must have been testing me for the function portion. From what I have been reading if untreated it will effect the functioning at some point.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
