Swollen, Miserable Can't Keep Fluids Down

Recommended Posts

I had my sleeve done July 12, 2012 and I've pretty much been in the hospital ever since. I'm unable to keep down liquids and the Dr is saying my stomach is still swollen too tight. I'm being sent home today with steroids and antacids via picc line IV. Docs are saying the swelling should go down with the steroids as they are trying to avoid going back to do a revision surgery (rny). Has anyone experienced this? I'm just praying the swelling will go down and I can at least get liquids down. I'll be seeing my Dr in his office next Tuesday July 31st and the hope is the swelling would've gone down where they can do an edg with dilation or even better won't have to do a scope at all. I'm so nervous and scared. I'd also like to mention I went from lapband to sleeve.

You poor thing. This has to be very scary for you. Where do you live? Who was your surgeon? Sounds like they made the sleeve too small. You are in my prayers. Best of luck. I'm sure everything will be alright.

I had extreme swelling too but I was able to get liquids down, slowly, by only sipping through a 1 ounce med cup and I could get very little in at first. Do or did you have any sort of chronic inflammation issues or have you seen a rheumotologist in the past? I assumed my swelling is the fact that I get chronic inflammation throughout my body due to mixed tissue disease / Lupus.

You could visibly see that my stomach (about 2 inches above my belly button) was extremely swollen 5 weeks after surgery. It does get better every day. Hopefully they do a blood test on you since they are actually starting you steroids to check for inflammation and check for positive ana's.

In case you are worried about the steroids/weight gain don't. Steroids will not make you fat. They do increase the appetite which may help you get liquids down and they actually can give you extra energy, something I am sure you are lacking right now. Since you can't get liquids down you aren't going to overeat.

If you aren't using a one ounce med cup try using that to take slow sips, and realize this is temporary. I am so sorry you are going through this and I'm sending you my thoughts and prayers.

I live in Toledo, Ohio my surgeon was Dr. Timothy Duckett. I am so miserable I don't know how they could've made such a big mistake as making the sleeve too small. It's very unsettling for me, this has been one of the worst experiences of my life. I haven't seen my 3 year old son in over a week. I just want to feel semi normal again.

MinaT I do have ulcerative colitis and also have had carpal tunnel issues in the past. I'm just praying the swelling goes down so I can get on track. I don't even care about the eating right now, I'd just be happy to keep down fluids.

It's hard for me to see the light at the end of the tunnel when it seems to be no improvement. I'm just so scared, feels like I'm losing it. How can I take care if my child in this state. I'm trying to keep my faith and not feel broken.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
