Teachers? Where Are The Teachers?

Recommended Posts

I teach 8th grade science in the DFW area in Tx. I had my sleeve done over the Thanksgiving break this past year. Just past 8 months out and I have lost 119 lbs. I told the people that I work with that I was having the sleeve and they were supportive of me and have been a great support since. Everyone has had a kind word and a keep it up. I am thankful for great people to work with. My students this year did not really say much but I have seen some that I previously taught and got the OMG....you have gotten so skinny or thin.....got to love it. I love how all us teachers have scheduled our surgery around breaks. Made me laugh!!! Well good luck to all and have a great "thin" year!! I will be.

HI! I teach 7th grade Language Arts in California. I won't be sleeved until November' date=' but I've already told five co-workers (two of whom are my roommates).

I will tell my principal and that is all. I'm getting sleeved over Thanksgiving break (we get a week off) and will take off the week after. I've already begun a high Protein low carb diet with exercise so I'll have already lost weight when school starts back up next month.

I don't plan on telling any of my students... possibly a while after the surgery if they ask about the weight loss. I guess I'll decide when that time comes <img src='http://www.bariatricpal.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />[/quote']

Most won't even say a word. Mine did not when I had it done. They will be afraid to offend you. That is what I came to find out from a couple of kids I was close too. Good luck to you.

Hello everyone! I'm a high English teacher in Detroit and was sleeved June 12th. I missed the last week of school and my 9th graders badgered me to why I wouldn't be there. My admin team and close teacher friends know and I've seen them a couple times since. Very encouraging. We're having a high turnover of staff this year so it won't be such a big shock. The kids....well you teenagers are self absorbed so the may or may not notice in the fall lol.

So true about the teens. LOL!!

I don't report back until next Monday, but I have been on campus....I've received some interesting reactions....some people still trying to figure out what is different about me, the 3 who know I've had surgery have been laughing, lol at my expense because Friday while I was talking to my colleagues/friends three people walked up to ask me if my hair changed...lol...and I told ten casually no, it's the same....lol

I went back unofficially today, and saw 4 staff members. All of them were floored. I "only" lost about 15-20 pounds since school let out, but it must be hugely noticeable given the reactions today. I am down 125 pounds overall though, so if they are comparing to that then there is a huge difference. To the above poster... i also teach 5th grade and was losing a lot last year. The kids really didn't say anything. I did chat about how I am working on the weight so i will not imbibe on birthday treats so as not to offend any of them. They quickly came up with the suggestion that I raffle them off and the class super enjoyed that all year. I won a major award last year that had a big assembly involved so even the young students send me treats... thank goodness the kids came up with the raffle idea because that stuff sitting around is too tempting! But through it all the kids never talked about it to me other in the context of the raffle and warning the parents to not include food gifts at the holidays and end of the year. 5th graders are wonderful!

As a middle school teacher we get the kids at their most "strange" moment in their lives but I love it. Today I saw a student I had two years ago, who is now a sophmore in HS, and he was shocked by me. It took him a few moments to recognize me but when he did he gave me a big hug and ready for it....told me how proud of me he was. WOW. What a role reverse that was but it was the greatest compliment I have received since my surgery. Thought I would share as we all head back to class as "new" teachers.

I've been back for a week of teacher meetings. I've been asked if I'm feeling alright and told that I've really lost a lot of weight. My principal asked what I've been doing to lose - I told her high Protein, low carbs. (I won't be sharing about my wls at work.)

I am a science teacher at a public high school in Spanaway, Wa and also teach college for Pierce College. My health was SOOOO BAD during the last school year that I had to tell my department members that I was having the sleeve. My sleeve was June 21, right after school got out, so I have seen very few of my colleagues, but the ones I have seen have noticed that I am HEALTHY now. What the rest of the school thinks, I do not care. This was for me, to stay alive. My comment to them...it is a great day to be on the right side of the grass! :-)

Well I am a fifth grade teacher as well and the good thing is that this is a new school. I do not know any of them so this will be interesting. I have not told a soul except my husband and he is great and supportive. I didn't tell any of my family members and don't intend to do so. They are all aware that I am eating better and exercising...enough said. So far so good, no one has said anything about my portion sizes but I was never a big eater anyways...

I so wished I was able to transfer schools over the summer....I'm praying I will be able to for next school year....

SO far not many people have commented, the teacher aides have, but everyone else haven't and I kinda like it that way....but I will be losing more so I know the comments will be made later in the year....

Well I wouldn't worry about their comments...you can always use what I say...I am exercising and eating high Protein and very little carbs. In the end, it doesnt matter what they say because people will always have comments good and bad...:)

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
