Oh my goodness, what a story this has been! My name is Nancy and I am 51 years old. I have metabolic syndrome (syndrome X) and have been battling weight all of my life! I had my sleeve done June 21, 2012 and am so thankful I did. I still battle some of the effects of the metabolic syndrome, but I can now CONTROL the symptoms, which I could not do before. The heaviest I ever weighed in my life was 275lbs as a teenager. I lost a LOT of weight through extensive exercise and the lowest weight I ever attained as an adult was 160lbs. I bounced around-up-down-up-down, all of my adult life. The worst part of that was the metabolic syndrome symptoms got WORSE as I would get smaller, so doctors visits were always an emotional nightmare. Finally at 47, menopause kicked in and threw my body into a complete tailspin that I could not recover from. The drugs quit working and I started dying. By the time I got to the surgery, I was one very sick lady, weighing in at 204 lbs. I started the process for the sleeve in October of 2011 and could not get healthy enough until mid-June.....I hit the magic numbers and was in a week later for the operation. The surgery was a breeze, recover so easy and I have not looked back. I would like to say that I was 100% cured of the diabetes, hashimoto's, high lipids and hypertension, but that would be lying. What I can say is that compared to BEFORE the surgery, my labs are ten thousand times better! My sugar is still slightly high, but I went from thed 500's on insulin to the mid 100's on nothing. My hypertension is mostly gone except for stress response. I am a high school science teacher so that ought to tell you about stress response :-) My thyroid-well-Hashimoto's is not curable so that is that, and my lipids are only slightly elevated instead of being off the charts. So cured? No, not yet. But going to live a lot longer? You bet! So 5 months out and I am doing well. I get frustrated with all of this and such a slow weight loss, but I am alive and relatively healthy and am so much more well off than before! I am thankful for my doctor and my team! The Puget Sound Surgical Center team is the BEST!!!!!!
