My First Emotional Breakdown

Recommended Posts

I Realize it's to be expected to have crazy emotions sometimes! Today while sitting at my fav restaurant sipping on my water..and yesterdays movie wit hubby and son eating my all time favorite popcorn...I just lost it! It's hard to explain the feeling although I'm sure many of you will be able to relate...it's not that I was craving those foods at all...I think I was mourning the process of stuffing my face till I was miserable!! I'm only 6 days post op so I do realize it gets better!! It just a huge adjustment that in the long run will be so worth it!!

3rd day out I had an emotional episode as well. 9 days I just wanted to eat. I think the important part is to understand why and/or what you're doing and how you can fix it. For example I realized coming home and stuffing my face as I watched tv on my couch was how I relaxed. Now I just watch tv to relax or fix myself I good Protein Drink. Time helps to figure yourself out. Good luck

You are sooo not alone in this! I went and saw the amazing spiderman yesterday, and everyoneeee was eating popcorn! I was a movie popcorn junkie, and could literally finish a bag myself. It was really hard, but I tried not to focus on it. lol. It will definitely get better :) Will just take some time!

I'm so glad that I am cheap!

Seriously, I think that, in it self has helped me in this process. I never was willing to spend 5dollars+ on popcorn. And now when I go into a restaurant all I can think of is "Am I really gonna spend 10-15 on a meal when 1/2 will end up in the trash, & 2/3 of the other half will be leftovers?"

Who would have thought that being frugal would make getting healthy easier??

Until I have a handle on my emotions and especially so soon from surgery, I avoid things that are going to cause me anxiety or emotional outbursts which will cause my family any sort of emotional turmoil too.

I am not the only one going through this process. Both my husband and son have had to suffer along with me. If I get upset, they get upset. Even my own father feels uncomfortable eating in front of me and causes him anxiety.

I avoid putting myself into situations where it will cause me to get upset, so I don't upset them. It's not their fault that I decided to have the surgery and they should not have to pay the price for it. I'm a popcornahaulic, I always have been. I haven't gone to the movies yet. I will when I know I can handle it.

It's not that I'm avoiding life, I'm avoiding putting myself in position that could cause me to become emotional, therefore sparing my family my emotional angst.

It's not easy, but I have started serving my family foods that I used to enjoy and that I can't have. One more day until I start pureed food. It's been a long 5 weeks plus 2 weeks of liquid pre-op shake. 7 of liquid....but it's worth it.

I am only 10 days post op, and I made spaghetti for my cousin's family a few nights ago. I mourned knowing that I will never eat a huge plate of spaghetti and 3-4 pieces of bread.

What did make me feel better is knowing that one day, I will be able to eat a child's size portion and feel just as stuffed as gorging on that huge plate I used to make. I think I will be completely satisfied with eating the amount my body needs and not the amount my head wants.

Makes sense to avoid it and for now I will probably have to! I know I will be fine once I can eat more cause I am still clear liquid! I just didn't want to deprive them so I thought I would be ok (was yest with popcorn) then i caved today! Lesson learned.

Ok. So say months after post op could you have a handful

Of popcorn? It may be enuf to feel satisfied and not bitter. I see movies maybe 8/ year. And I hope post surgery I'm happy with a handful ( or sneaking in some cheese or something) vs 10 cups with butter like before ??? Is it an off limits food always?

Absolutely. Nothing is "off limits" forever.

popcorn, for me, is one of those slider foods that I can eat a lot of. Funny thing is the movie popcorn is so buttery it doesn't taste as good as it used to so I don't eat a lot of it at movies. Microwave popcorn, on the other hand, I could eat almost the whole bag at one time so I have to be careful, it just goes down really easy for me and I love it. Like I said this is a slider food for me, I have a lot of restriction with almost everything else but popcorn goes right down.

I had terrible "head hunger" whille on full liquids. My family had pizza, my fav, and I took a bite, chewed it up and spit it out. I just needed the taste. I am doing mushies...so what ever I fix them I just puree for me. Had chicken stew yesterday!

You realize what you did, just get yourself back on track. Like MinaT said, try not to put yourself in situations where you are going to struggle like this. I realize that may involve changing some family outings but it is temporary and hopefully your family will support this while you are in the early stages of this journey. It is so critical for you to adhere to the Protein first regimen right now. You can do this.

Please know it gets better! I was a large popcorn with butter eater...I am 3 months out now and honestly..sometimes just 3-5 pieces of popcorn is enough...sometimes I don't need any of it. I don't crave it at all like I did..although I do enjoy the smell of it when I go into the movies..but no cravings! I cried the first week and after that..the tears dried up! I think it's a combination of anesthesia and no sugar whatsoever and once that withdrawal is over..it gets better!!!

Oh starting about 9 days out I got the tears. I think it's part of healing, anesthesia or whatever. Someone else said as you start burning fat it releases hormones.

I love popcorn. It's probably the only high carb food that I really truly love. I'm a meat lover all the way, but popcorn is my Achilles.

I've served my favorite steak, jalapeno cheddarworst, hot spicy italian sausage with green peppers and onions, turkey burgers, my favorite chicken and right now we are avoiding, shrimp (because I love it and still on Full liquids and I'm at 5 weeks out from surgery.

I am not fond of spaghetti, so I thought sure, I'll fix spaghetti, I think it's the first time I thought, wow I would like spaghetti. It's a mind trip though for sure, I drink 1/2 cup of milk and I'm so full it goes away.

Best of luck to you all.

Best of luck you are just out don't be too hard on yourself, but right now, I'm avoiding things that make me and the family uncomfortable and I'm getting better every day.a For the first few days home I didn't eat dinner until they were done and the dishes were away. Now I can cook for them and be okay.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
