Juicing And The Sleeve

Recommended Posts

Hello all! This is my first Forum topic. I've been reading your posts and so forth for over a year while mentally preparing to take this step. I'm still scared as hell, but excited too as I know that surgery is the right tool for me. I'll be starting orientation with Richmond Kaiser in a couple of days. So anyone reading this from my neck of the hoods please introduce yourself, I need as much support as possible.

Anywho, on to the question. I've recently acquired a juicer and find juicing to be super delicious and healthy. I'm wondering if anyone out there has used juicing to get some of the nutrients we need after surgery or is it a no no? I've noticed that sometimes the juices I make can be super sweet (Beets, carrots, apple, and parsley juice this morning was like drinking candy! Yummy!).

Thanks for reading. Can't wait to read your responses.

I do juicing! My son and his wife brought me a juicer the day I came home from the hospital. I cleared it first with my Dr at my one week post op. Its a great way to get in your needed liquids as well as Vitamins. Right now this is the way I get in my veggies since I don't really have room when eating.

Hi Natty and welcome to VST. After surgery, the primary focus of your diet will be getting in sufficient Protein and eating lower in carbs. I would imagine juice is very carb heavy. However, that being said, I don't worry too much about how many carbs I eat. I eat such a little amout of food now that, by virtue of eating a lot of protein, my carb count doesn't get that high. I don't see why you couldn't incorporate a Protein Powder into your juices. I wouldn't just juice without protein powder though because that is just liquid calories without our VSG'ers most important nutrient, protein. Best of luck to you on your journey.

Hi Natty - the carbs are pretty low if you are using veggies for your juices. For example, 8oz of spinach juice is only 3.5 carbs and beet juice is only 9 carbs. These are also good carbs to have in your diet plus you are getting in part of your 64oz of liquid a day. I treat this as part of my Water that I get in each day so I don't bother with Protein Powder. Both my Doctor and Nut are happy with this approach but I really suggest you talk to your own Dr and Nut and see what they say for you.

Thanks for bringing this up! I never even thought about juicing as another option... This sounds great, I think I'll give it a try after surgery!

Juicing is super good! Don't forget to add your herbs and other small things that can make a juice!

Cayenne pepper, bee pollen, orange juice, honey (forget about the carbs if you are about a month or so past and you get an OK - honey and such and in moderation are good carbs!) nectarine and papaya is a great juice/smoothy - you put the papaya in last frozen and blend wit what you juiced - and the cayenne perrer and bee pollen at the papaya stage, too.

Look for local juice bars, too - you can try juices before going our and spending alot. When you are busy, and a regular, you can usually begin to get a deal on your juice, too - enough to last a couple of days, but it is best fresh.

Another thing - take your oum container and see if they offer a green discount - that is, a small discount for a refill rather than throw away - and they save on the cost of a cup, lid and straw.

If you are anywhere near Houston try Juicy in the Sky...most awesome juice bar!

Thanks for this topic, I am saving for a juicer and plan on using it to get in my vegetables as part of my liquids after surgery. I went out yesterday and passed up the magic bullet for a hand blender so that I can get my juicer in a couple of weeks.

Hi Natty! I was sleeved through Richmond Kaiser too. If you don't know already, we have a support group that meets the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month. Next meeting is 6:00 on Wed. July 18. All meetings are in room 317, probably the same room as your orientation.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
