Need Tips On Eating Slower

Recommended Posts

I guess it's all the years as a teacher, but I am the world's fastest eater. Thankfully I premeasure what I'm eating or I'm sure it would be coming right back up. My NUT told me to put my utensil down between every bite, but I was wondering if anyone else had any tricks that help you eat slowly?

I go on the computer while I eat so I am distracted... this will not help me once I go back to work though.

The best advice I got and use when I notice I'm eating faster is to use a kiddie spoon/fork for smaller bites and wait 2 minutes in-between each bite. That way you know you have chewed really good, you are taking really small bites and you know for sure you are not eating too fast. I have gotten to where I don't really need to do that anymore, but sometimes I catch myself going too fast and I just go right back to timing myself.

I'm only in phase 2 and I'm right there with you. I must have ate like I was in a marathon. Tonight I was sitting here eating small bites....I'm still on liquids and my husband said you need to slow down. Then my daughter was like yea mommy you do, let me show you how. I'm eating small bites but its just quick I guess and I don't realize it until I'm in pain. Maybe we need to count in between bites or something. I wish I could help you out more. But I'm in the same boat.

My nut. said to chew each bite 25 times. hard to do with soup! but I would count beween bites to keep from eating to fast. I still count about 20 times when I am eating out and cut meats into small bites it keeps me from finishing my meal way before everyone else and then have to watch them eat I also put fork down often and use a reg. spoon if I am eating Soup instead of the big spoon they bring.

Cut up you food into tiny pieces and eat one at a time. Hard to get tose tiny buggers on a fork!! Lol takes much longer so it works like a charm. Plus it works mentally because it looks like there's much more on your plate

Another fast eater here - and yes, learning to eat slowly is one of the biggest challenges that I've had post-op. I find that putting down my utensils is not quite enough. What I do is actually move my plate a couple of feet away from me - when it's not in front of me, it's much easier to wait a minute or two till the next bite.

I am a fast eater too. I have to put my fork down and either watch the clock to track when to take my next bite or if I'm out with friends I'll make sure to talk between each bite. Seems to help - hopefully it will become 2nd nature not to want to inhale my food :)

I'm time crazy, so for me there has to be a clock, watch, sundial anything around. . what i do is sit down, take a spoonful (forkful) and time myself. . .I chew, swallow, and time myself for 1 full minute, then repeat, until 20 minutes are over. . .if i'm not done eating, the rest on the plate goes to the dog or into the trash. . . using a small spoon and pie fork work the best. . . don't drink with your meal either. . do that about 15 minutes AFTER you eat. . . good luck

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
