Seriously Think I'm Failing At This..

Recommended Posts

Revised 5/9. Lost 12 lbs pre-op and since 5/9 have lost 6 lbs (all in one week, a week ago) and have gone back up 1.5 weeks. I'm at 183.4 now and my goal is 155. I'm so freakin frustrated I want to cry and scream simultaneously. I've been told it's because I'm so close to goal but I've seen others close to goal lose 20-30 lbs already. What is wrong with me?!?!?!?!?! Am I being perfect, no. But certainly not bad enough to warrant this. I'm glad that I'm rid of the band - I think going over a month without throwing up is quite an accomplisment after 3 years with the band - but I did hope to lose weight that I wasn't able to lose with the band. I just can't fathom failing at something that really should be failproof. My stomach is smaller for goodness sake! I had a Cobb salad for lunch at work yesterday and this is a salad I would have finished in 15 minutes even with the band but it was my lunch, dinner, snack inbetween and I still threw 1/4 of it away. I hate to say this, but the brownies are looking pretty good right now, now losing anyway right? UGH. So disgusted with myself.

don't get so discouraged and don't eat the brownies! :) your body is adjusting to its new anatomy. stay strong and keep in mind that it hasn't even been six weeks since surgery. your body is still healing. everyone loses differently. i've had small gains as well, but i keep at it and the weight does come off. you can do this!!

I haven't heard of anyone else only losing 4 lbs immediately after surgery. That's not even a lb a week.

STEP AWAY FROM THE BROWNIES! Sweetie, it's very soon and you don't have much to lose. You have to be patient!

In the meantime, I have three questions for you:

Are you food journaling?

Are you getting your Water in?

Are you exercising?

I don't know where the post is now, but I remember reading a post last week or so where someone said she only lost 2-4 lbs the first 4 months after surgery, but then started losing a lot. Everyone is so different, it's hard to know what's going on. Have you had your thyroid levels & other blood levels checked? Have you tried increasing calories and/or activity? Have you tried alternating your calories each day to trick your body so it's not used to the same calories every day? Have you tried having Breakfast for dinner & switching up meals like that?

You simply cannot hold yourself to a standard of what other people are doing. It will mean failure almost always, because you will never be the same.

I've been sleeved going on 13 weeks. I haven't lost anything (neither pounds nor inches) in about 10 weeks. I haven't seen anyone else that stalled, that soon, with still needing to lose > 100 lbs. But that doesn't mean I can look at everyone else around me who's posting losses on a daily basis and think that I, personally, am somehow failing. It just cannot work that way.

Even if you lose nothing else for a bit, you've still lost (post-op) 6 pounds in a month, which is well above an average. (I'm not sure what you mean by you've gone up 1.5 weeks? Given up, maybe? Or gone up 1.5 lbs?)

If your weight did not fluctuate, that's when you'd need to be concerned because it would mean your body was not working properly.

I am 4 weeks post-op and have only lost 12 pounds which I thought was horrible however, after being on this site, I am now re-encouraged and looking forward to the next 4 weeks. Hang in their and believe in you. We do!

Please don't compare your weight loss to others. I know that is hard not to do, but you are only setting yourself up that way. You KNOW that everyone's body is different. You know that it can be slower because you have less to lose. Don't lose hope! You have only just begun! This is not a race. There is NO SET TIME to lose your weight. Just keep working it. Be encouraged.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
