Need Some Quick Advice About Dehydration.......and Broccoli?

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved March 28th(7-8 weeks out) and I had two small pieces of broccoli for dinner last night, no stems and cooked medium but I chewed them well I think. I haven't been able to hold anything down since I ate that last night including Water. I had lots of foamies today everytime I try anything from Protein shakes to Water and (sorry for the grossness) but I'm puking mucous stuff and feeling like I need to spit constantly. Since it's now been 24 hours I'm starting to feel really thirsty. Been outside, by the pool and at baseball games and birthday parties, all with my emergency puke cup. I'm afraid to eat or drink anything so I really haven't tried but a few things today like water and capri sun and a Protein shake. I don't feel like I have a stomach bug and I don't even feel worn down yet from not holding food or water down. I always get my 60-80g of Protein and minimum 64 oz. water, never had this before but I've never had broccoli since the sleeve either. I had foamies once when I ate too fast and I've never really done it again but this seems different. It didn't even occur to me but now I'm wondering if I blocked something up and it's stuck and that is why food won't go down. It seems like I would be in pain though if something like that happened. No pain, just feel very full and can't keep anything down. When will I be dehydrated and should I call my doc yet?

I don't know if this makes a difference either but I started losing weight all of a sudden at an incredibly fast rate 3 days ago. I was pretty steady for about 8-9 days and then started dropping between 1.5 pounds per day, eating aand drinking the same things as usual. I've lost about 6 pounds in 3 days and I'm a pound lighter than I was this morning since I have no Fluid or food in me at all right now. Any advice, is this normal and is it possible that the broccoli can even get stuck? I'm cleared for all foods I thought except celery and red meat. I'm kind of afraid to call it a night without any fluids in me. Thanks everyone ;-)

Hi there, I can't speak from too much experience as I'm only three weeks out but not being able to get any Water in for over a day sounds serious enough to warrant a call to your surgeon. I would recommend that.

I agree that you need to call your doctor. Ordinarily, I'd say that broccoli just doesn't agree with you, but not being able to eat or drink today is a big red flag, IMO. You say that you feel full, but you can't take anything in by mouth. Yeah, you may have a blockage somewhere. Perhaps wait a couple of months before you try raw broccoli again once this is resolved?

Good luck!

I had a very similar experience the first time I ate salmon post-sleeve. It came up after about 8 painful hours and the following day my stomach was so sensitive I couldn't keep anything down. I went to bed early and when I got up the next day (2nd day after eating that blasted fish) I could keep down warm liquids. The third day was even better, had a Protein shake and some soft food.

I think the broccoli didn't agree with you, but f you don't feel better in the morning, I think you should call your doc.

The broccoli was prob way to fiberous. I was told that Fiber was not permitted the first few months as it is too rough going down. Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks everyone for your quick advice to nudge me in the right direction. I did call the nutritionist on her cell-was definitely broccoli fiber irritating stomach. Finally keeping Water down and back on liquids for a day pr two until irritation goes away. Looking back, broccoli was not a smart thing to eat but it wasn't on my no fly list......which just proves what a valuable lesson I learned taking for granted how totally smooth this whole process has been and that I still have to be actively involved in deciding what goes in my mouth to nourish my body. Take away-go slow even when feeling good! Thank you friends for all the good advice! ;-)

Yeah!! Thanks for updating us - I read somewhere that broccoli was one of the toughest foods to eat - the fiber and the little pieces on the flowerette part. Glad you are able to get some other stuff down!

FYI- update on broccoli drama ;-), but I think it's important information just to get out there. I went to the doc today, they heard the "saga" and symptoms and sent me down for gallbladder check. I had gallstones. Since i haven't had any pain, doc wanted to rule out broccoli being stuck before scheduling me for a gallbladder removal surgery so I got to drink the barium liquid again for an upper GI. It went down very slow and went up and down in my esophogus but finally passed through a very narrow esophogus. I'm back on liquids for a week and he thinks the cause of not tolerating solids suddenly was most defintely the broccoli and not the gallstones. He thinks it passed through(he didn't see it in my esophogus or stomach) but says it could have scraped it's way down and scar tissue developed narrowing my already narrowed esophogus or it could just be irritated and inflamed from the broccoli being so harsh going down. Don't eat broccoli at 7 weeks! He didn't rule out a stricture yet but he really thinks it's just irritated.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
